Tech Soccer Falls in GLIAC Tourney – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In the district semifinals of the high school volleyball tournament tonight…
– Division Four District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell will play Baraga. L’Anse will meet Chassell tonight.
– Division Four District 97 at Watersmeet, Jeffers will face Wakefield-Marenisco. Ewen-Trout Creek will meet Bessemer.
– Division Three District 65 at Norway, Calumet will face Iron Mountain. Norway will play West Iron County in the other district semifinal.
– Division Two District District 33, Houghton will meet Escanaba tonight. Gladstone will play Kingsford in the other district final.

Finlandia
Finlandia University hockey goaltender Marcus Gloss has been named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week. The Houghton native made 29 saves in the Lions’ first-ever win over Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday.

Finlandia volleyball players Jessie Diaz and Kaisa Holmstrom have been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week.

MTU
The Michigan Tech soccer team’s season ended yesterday with a 1-0 loss to Ashland in the opening round of the the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament. Defenses dominated, with Ashland making just six shots, with three on goal; and the Huskies managing just eight, with four on goal. The only goal of the game came early in the second half.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team dropped a 93-47 exhibition game at Michigan State last night.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons’ late comeback fell short in a 108-105 loss to the Boston Celtics last night. Blake Griffin led Detroit with 24 points and 15 rebounds. The Pistons will face the Nets in Brooklyn tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Pistons have decided to keep Luke Kennard around for a while, and have exercised their contract option for the 2019-2020 season. They declined their option on Henry Ellenson’s contract, and he will become a free agent after this season.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings grabbed an early lead, then held off the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3 last evening. Detroit got goals from Michael Rasmussen, Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantha in the first period. After a scoreless second period, the Blue Jackets scored three goals in the third period to tie the game. Tyler Bertuzzi netted the game winner lade in regulation, and Larkin sealed the win with an empty-netter. Jimmy Howard made 34 saves. The Wings host the New Jersey Devils tomorrow. NFL
The Green Bay Packers gave up on two high-profile players just before the NFL trade deadline yesterday. Two days after an ill-advised attempt to return a kickoff from the end zone late in Green Bay’s loss to the Rams, Ty Montgomery was sent to the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2020 seventh-round draft pick. Safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was shipped to Washington in exchange for a fifth-round pick next spring.

The Detroit Lions traded receiver Golden Tate to the Philadelphia Eagles for a third-round pick next spring.

The Calumet Copper Kings will face Traverse City St. Francis Saturday at 1:00 in the Division Six district football final. The game will be played at Thirlby Field in Traverse City. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:35 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Finlandia University soccer teams will host the ACAA Tourney this weekend at McAfee Field. The women face Thomas More University in the semifinals Saturday at 10:00. The men will face Thomas More Saturday at 4:00. We’ll cover both semifinal games on 99.3 The Lift and TheLift.com, along with the championship games on Sunday, if the Lions advance.
