Tech Soccer Season Ends in GLIAC Quarters – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school softball yesterday…
• Calumet dropped both ends of its doubleheader against Kingsford, 9-4 and 4-0.
• The Lake Linden-Hubbell at Houghton games were postponed until today.
• Hancock at Gwinn – no report

  • L’Anse plays at Hancock.

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Houghton swept its doubleheader against Calumet, winning both games by scores of 8-0. Both contests ended after four innings because of the mercy rule. Cam Farrell pitched the first game for the Gremlins, and struck out eight. In the nightcap, he stole three bases, and scored three runs.
• The Ironwood at Lake Linden-Hubbell games were postponed until today.

Also on the baseball schedule today…
• Houghton visits the Gogebic Miners.
• L’Anse entertains Ontonagon.

College Soccer

The Tech soccer team’s season ended yesterday with a 6-3 loss to Grand Valley State in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals. Jesse Jacobusse scored twice for the Huskies, and Brooke Schauer added a goal.

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has added another player. Endi Aguilar was a four-year starter for Temple High School in Temple, Texas.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings fell to the Columbus Blue Jackets 1-0 in a shootout last night. Thomas Greiss made 33 saves, and took the tough loss in net.

The Wings visit the Carolina Hurricanes tomorrow. 

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Dallas Mavericks tomorrow.

MLB

Miguel Cabrera, Niko Goodrum and Jonathan Schoop homered, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 5-2 last night. José Ureña gave up two runs over seven innings, and earned the win. The victory came despite five Detroit errors.

The Tigers continue that series against the White Sox in Chicago tonight. Casey Mize will pitch against Carlos Rodon. Coverage will begin at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers held off the Miami Marlins 5-4 last evening. Adrian Houser pitched into the sixth inning, gave up three runs, and hit a home run. Tyrone Taylor also homered

The Brewers conclude that home set against the Marlins this afternoon.

Injuries continue to force roster moves for the Brewers. Manny Piña has been placed on the injured list with a broken toe he sustained when he fouled a ball off his foot Monday night. Daniel Robertson has entered concussion protocol, after he was hit on the head by a pitch in Sunday’s game. Milwaukee has also sent Phil Bickford to the alternate training site. Luke Maile, Corey Ray, and Patrick Weigel have been called up.
