Tech Upends MSU; Pack Falls in OT – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey Saturday…
– Calumet held a 2-0 lead late in the third period, but two power play goals by Sam Knoblauch enabled University of Detroit Jesuit to salvage a 2-2 tie. Robert Erkkila and Josh Larson scored for the Copper Kings, and Nick Voelker stopped 29 shots. On Friday, Calumet took a 3-0 lead, but couldn’t hold it, and settled for a 3-3 tie with the Cubs. 
– Houghton fell to Birmingham Brother Rice 6-1 at the Soo Lions Showcase Friday night. The Gremlins’ game against Dearborn Divine Child scheduled for Saturday was canceled.
– No results were reported from the tournament in Merrill, where L’Anse was playing along with Medford and Sparta.

In boys high school basketball Friday night…
– L’Anse lost at Ewen-Trout Creek 74-40.

In the girls action Friday night…
Houghton-Gremlins-Logo– Houghton shut down Westwood 55-29. Sloane Zenner led the Gremlins with 12 points.
– Hancock plays got past Jeffers 38-34.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City smothered Republic-Michigamme 40-17. Carli Daavettila scored 15 for the Blue Bolts.
– Chassell welcomes Wakefield-Marenisco.
– Baraga stifled Bessemer 61-18.
– Ontonagon downed Ewen-Trout Creek 58-28.

MTU
Alex Petan scored twice, as the Michigan Tech hockey team defeated 19th-ranked Minnesota State 3-1 Saturday night. Malcolm Gould had a goal and two assists, and Jamie Phillips made 25 saves. The Huskies skated to a 2-2 tie with the Mavericks Friday night. 

Both MTU basketball teams lost at Grand Valley Saturday afternoon. The women’s team trailed by just four points with less than three minutes to play, but the Lakers pulled away to a 68-57 victory. Mackenzie Perttu led the Huskies with 21 points. The men’s team fell behind by 18… closed the gap to four points… but lost to GVSU 64-53. Bryan Heath had 15 for Tech.

NMU
The Northern hockey team defeated Alaska-Fairbanks 5-3 Saturday night, after falling to the Nanooks 3-2 on Friday. 

The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team defeated Ferris State 79-64 Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats men’s team fell to the Bulldogs 96-79.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team lost 8-0 at St. Norbert University Saturday afternoon, and 7-1 Friday night. The Finlandia women’s hockey team fell to Marian University 4-0 Saturday, and  1-0 Friday night. The Lions remain winless this season.

Both Finlandia basketball teams lost at Northland College Saturday afternoon. The women’s team held a slight lead at the end of the first quarter, but eventually fell 74-66. Julia Daavettila led the Lions with 15 points and 15 rebounds. The Finlandia men’s team built a nine-point lead early in the second half, but lost to the Lumberjacks 68-63. Jordan LaPlant scored 18 for Finlandia.

GLHL
The score from the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Monroe Blues Friday night was not reported. The Pioneers will host the Marquette Iron Rangers this afternoon at 1:30. The Calumet Wolverines have the weekend off.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will entertain the Philadelphia Flyers tonight.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons upended the Golden State Warriors 113-95 Saturday night. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Reggie Jackson each scored 20 for Detroit. The Pistons host the Bulls tomorrow night.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers’ season ended with a 26-20 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL Divisional Round Saturday night. The Packers trailed 20-13 with five seconds remaining, but Aaron Rodgers found Jeff Janis in the end zone with a Hail Mary pass to force overtime. The extra period didn’t last long. On the first play, Larry Fitzgerald of the Cardinals turned a short pass into a 75-yard gain. Carson Palmer ended the game with a five-yard touchdown pass to Fitzgerald two plays later.

In the earlier game yesterday, the New England Patriots advanced with a 27-20 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Today, Seattle plays at Carolina at 1:05, and Pittsburgh plays at Denver at 4:40. Hear both games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
