Tech Volleyball Wins, Soccer Falls – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school cross country today, local teams will compete at the Calumet Invitational.

See the full schedule for all our local high school teams here.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team lost 2-0 to second-ranked Grand Valley State yesterday.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team fell to Carroll University 2-0 yesterday.

College Volleyball

The MTU volleyball team swept Ferris State yesterday 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-17). Anna Jonynas led the Huskies with 12 kills.

MLB

Eric Haase hit his 22nd home run, as the Detroit Tigers shut out the Tampa Bay Rays 2-0 yesterday. Wily Peralta got the win, allowing just three hits over seven innings.

The Tigers host the Chicago White Sox tonight. Matt Manning will start against Carlos Rodón. Because of Detroit Lions football, there will be no radio broadcast of tonight’s Tigers game.

Gregory Soto’s season is over. The Detroit reliever suffered a broken finger when he was hit by a batted ball during Friday’s game. He was officially placed on the injured list yesterday. Outfielder Derek Hill was also added to the list, after suffering a knee injury Saturday. Infielder Isaac Parades and outfielder Daz Cameron were called up from Toledo.

Former Tigers catcher Alex Avila will retire at the end of this season. Avila is 34 years old, and has struggled with the Washington Nationals this season. He spent two terms in Detroit, and is the son of Tigers general manager Al Avila.

The Chicago Cubs scored five runs in the eighth inning, and upended the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 yesterday. The outburst against Brad Boxberger and Jandel Gustave means the Brewers’ magic number for clinching the National League Central Division title remains at any combination of three Milwaukee wins or Saint Louis losses.

The Brewers open a home series against the Cardinals tonight. Freddy Peralta will start against Jake Woodford.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, Lamar Jackson scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, as the Baltimore Ravens stunned the Kansas City Chiefs 36-35.

The Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers meet tonight. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
