Thomas Dominates Canal Run Half Marathon – Sunday Sports Wrap

The Tigers held the Mariners to just three hits Saturday, on the way to a 6-0 victory. Michael Lorenzen pitched into the seventh, allowed two hits, and struck out seven. Kerry Carpenter hit two home runs.

The Tigers play in Seattle again today. Reese Olson will start against Bryce Miller. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers blanked the Reds 3-0. After allowing just two hits in Friday’s shutout win, Milwaukee gave Cincinnati just one hit Saturday. That came off Freddy Peralta, who went six innings, and struck out six. Christian Yelich, William Contreras and Owen Miller homered. The win moved Milwaukee into sole possession of first place in the American League Central Division.

Those teams meet again today in Cincinnati. Adrian Houser will pitch against Ben Lively.

Running

Nik Thomas won the half marathon at the Hancock Canal Run Saturday. The Michigan Tech and former Dollar Bay-Tamarack City High School standout finished nearly six-and-a-half minutes ahead of Michael holly from De Pere, Wisconsin. Francis Prins turned in the fastest women’s time, with Erica Nelson of Marquette second.

In other Canal Run races…
• Stephen Loparo from Portage, Michigan, won the Bob Olson Memorial 10k run, 30 seconds ahead of Houghton’s Eric Weiss. Cedar Gordon from Two Harbors, Minnesota, earned the fastest women’s time.
• Diana Obermeyer took the title in the 10k walk, more than 20 minutes better than Kayla Kunishige of Atlantic Mine. Chris Soshay of Calumet was the top men’s finisher, and third overall.
• Chassell’s Kolson Kytta won the 5k run, two minutes and 20 seconds better than Brandon Peterson, also of Chassell. Michigan Tech and former Houghton High School standout Ingrid Seagren was the fastest woman, and placed fifth overall.
• In the 5k walk, Robert Haase of Calumet took first place for the second straight year, with Jacqueline Isaacson of Peachtree City, Georgia second.
