MLB – Tigers Reclaim First Place
The Detroit Tigers scored the winning run on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night, as the edged the Kansas City Royals 6-5. Detroit took an early lead, scoring four runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Andrew Romine and Ian Kinsler. The Royals came back with four runs in the fourth off David Price. K-C took the lead when Alex Gordon drove in Eric Hosmer in the top of the seventh. At that point, Price left the game with what appeared to be an injury. The Tigers re-tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Anthony Gose scored on a Victor Martinez fielder’s choice. Gose led off the bottom of the ninth with a double. Ian Kinsler tried to sacrifice him to third base, but Gose ran all the way home with the winning run on pitcher Yohan Pino’s throwing error.

The win moves the Tigers a half-game ahead of the Royals in the American League Central Division.

The Tigers host the Kansas City Royals again this afternoon. Anibal Sanchez will start against Jeremy Guthrie. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

There was no word immediately after the game as to what injury Price suffered. He came up limping after stepping on a bat while backing up a play at the plate. Catcher Alex Avila missed the game because of a bruise on his right arm that he sustained on a foul ball during Thursday’s contest. He’s considered “day to day.”

Four Chicago batters homered, as the Cubs got past the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 Friday night. Three of them came off Jimmy Nelson, who gave up four runs over seven innings, and took the loss. The fourth came off reliever Brandon Kintzler in the ninth inning. The Brewers made it close by scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth on a Ryan Braun homer, but couldn’t close the gap. Milwaukee’s record of 9-21 matches the worst 30-game start in club history.

The Brewers host the Cubs again tonight. Kyle Lohse will pitch against Travis Wood.
