Tigers, Brewers Fall – Tuesday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Houston Astros scored four runs in the first inning, then held on to defeat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 last night. Edwin Jackson gave up all five Houston runs over five innings. Ronny Rodriguez and Travis Demeritte homered for Detroit.

The Tigers continue that series at Houston tonight. Spencer Turnbull will start against Aaron Sanchez. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers got just one hit last night, in a 3-0 loss to the Saint Louis Cardinals. Zach Davies took the tough loss in his return from the injured list, giving up two runs on three hits over five innings.

The Brewers continue that set in Saint Louis tonight. Gio Gonzalez will start against Michael Wacha.

Milwaukee is in third place in the National League Central Division, now three games behind the Cardinals, and a half-game behind the Chicago Cubs.

Brewers center fielder Lorenzo Cain missed his second straight game last night because of a sore oblique muscle. Manager Crag Counsell said he hopes Cain can avoid time on the injured list.

Baseball spring training schedules for the 2020 preseason have been released. The Tigers will play an exhibition against Southeastern University on February 21st, and then open their Grapefruit League campaign the next day against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Milwaukee Brewers will begin their Cactus League schedule February 22nd against the Texas Rangers.

High School

The Calumet, Houghton and Hancock high school hockey teams will return to the MIHL Trenton Showcase again this season. The roster of participating teams was announced yesterday. The showcase will take place February 6th through the 8th. Match-ups will be determined closer to the event.

Calumet Wolverines

The annual Calumet Wolverines Golf Outing will take place Saturday, August 31st. Four-person teams will begin with a shotgun start at the Calumet Golf Club. Horseshoes

Calumet One claimed the Copper Country Horseshoe League tournament crown last night, defeating L and L in the title match. Dreamland One beat Harter’s Party Store in the consolation match.
