Tigers, Brewers Prevail – Sunday Sports Wrap

NHL

In the NHL tournament, the Stars netted two late goals to down the Oilers 3-1. The Western Conference championship series is tied 1-1, and continues tomorrow in Edmonton.

The Eastern Conference series continues this afternoon, as the Panthers host the Rangers. That set is tied 1-1.

NBA

In the NBA tournament, Jrue Holiday made a layup and three free throws in the final 40 seconds, as the Celtics pulled out a 114-111 victory over the Pacers. Boston leads the Eastern Conference championship series 3-0, with game four tomorrow in Indiana.

The Mavericks welcome the Timberwolves tonight. Dallas has a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference championship series.

MLB

Kerry Carpenter’s two-run homer in the first inning held up, as the Tigers edged the Blue Jays 2-1 yesterday. Reese Olson tossed six scoreless innings, and left as Toronto scored in the seventh. He earned his first win of the season, and and dropped his earned run average to 1.92.

The Tigers conclude that home series against the Blue Jays today. Casey Mize will start against Yusei Kikuchi. Coverage will begin at 11:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers also built an early lead, and cruised past the Red Sox 6-3. Joey Ortiz’ two-run double capped a five-run burst in the third inning. Brice Turang added a late home run. Jared Koenig opened on the mound. Colin Rae took over in the second, and held Boston hitless until the seventh.

That series continues in Boston this afternoon.

The Brewers have bolstered their pitching staff by obtaining Garrett Stallings from the Orioles. Stalling had recently been designated for assignment. Milwaukee gives up two low-level minor league pitchers – Thyago Vieira and Aneuris Rodriguez.
