MLB
The Detroit Tigers battled until their final at-bat, but fell to the Minnesota Twins 5-4 last night. Detroit got off to an early lead, with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, and another in the sixth. Matthew Boyd threw five scoreless innings, but allowed a run in the sixth, and left as Minnesota scored four times to take the lead in the seventh. The Tigers pushed a final run across in the ninth, but the game ended when Jeimer Candelario grounded out with runners at first and second.

The Tigers continue that series against the Twins in Minnesota tonight. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit’s starting rotation suffered another blow yesterday, when Blaine Hardy was placed on the disabled list. Hardy was diagnosed with tendinitis in his pitching elbow. Ryan Carpenter has been brought up from Toledo.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Saint Louis Cardinals 5-2 last evening. The Cardinals scored three runs early off Freddy Peralta. Milwaukee closed the gap with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but Saint Louis responded with two in the bottom of the inning.

The Brewers continue that set at St. Louis tonight. Wade Miley will pitch against Miles Mikolas.

Milwaukee slugger Eric Thames left last night’s game after a collision with Lorenzo Cain in the outfield. Thames reported soreness in his right knee. He’ll be examined today. Brewers’ catcher Manny Piña got some good injury news. An MRI of the shoulder he hurt in a basepath collision on Wednesday shows no structural damage. He could return to the lineup as early as tonight.

NFL
The Detroit Lions fell to the New York Giants 30-17 in NFL exhibition play last night. Detroit scored just three points through the first three quarters. Jake Rudock passed for a touchdown and ran for another in the fourth quarter to close the gap a bit. Matthew Stafford saw his first preseason action, completing two of five passes for 51 yards.
