The Finlandia University volleyball team plays at Wisconsin-Superior tonight.

MLB
The Kansas City Royals scored four runs in the third inning off Artie Lewicki, and held off the Detroit Tigers 7-6 yesterday. In his major league debut, Lewicki gave up five runs on 11 hits over five innings. The Royals scored insurance runs off Daniel Stumpf and Drew VerHagen – runs they would need when Nicholas Castellanos closed the gap to one with a three-run homer in the ninth. The Tigers then put two more runners on base, but Mikie Mahtook grounded into a force play to end the game.

The Tigers host the Royals again tonight. Anibal Sanchez will return from more than two weeks on the disabled list to start for Detroit. He’s been nursing a sore hamstring. Jason Vargas will counter for the Royals. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Tigers have called up right-handed reliever Victor Alcantara from the Mud Hens, and say he’ll be the final September addition to their roster. That means we won’t see Bruce Rondón again this season, and could be a signal that his time in the Detroit organization is nearing an end.

Former Tiger J.D. Martinez had quite a game for the Arizona Diamondbacks last night. Martinez became just the 18th player in major league history to hit four home runs in one game. Three came in consecutive innings – the seventh, eighth and ninth – as the D’backs blanked the Dodgers 13-0.

Billy Hamilton’s solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday. Hamilton’s shot off reliever Josh Hader came after Milwaukee had scored four times in the seventh inning on home runs by Ryan Braun and Orlando Arcia to tie the game.

The Brewers play at Cincinnati again tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Robert Stephenson.

The Cubs also lost, so Milwaukee remains three-and-a-half games behind Chicago in the National League Central Division race.

Breakers to Bridge
The Breakers to Bridge Paddle Festival will be held this weekend, to raise awareness of silent water sports activities in the Copper Country. Friday begins with a casual social at the KBC at 6:00. On Saturday, a 10-mile, non-competitive paddle from the North Canal Boat Launch to the Portage Lake Lift Bridge will take place, followed by a celebration with kids games at Houghton East Waterfront Park. The event is being planned by the Keweenaw Land Trust in partnership with Michigan Tech’s Outdoor Adventure Program.
