MLB – Tigers Blank Bucs Again
Rajai Davis’ homer to lead off the sixth inning was the only run the Detroit Tigers needed, as they blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 last night. Alfredo Simon gave up just two hits over eight innings to earn the win, which was Detroit’s second straight shutout.

The Tigers have today off, and open a home set against the Chicago White Sox tomorrow afternoon. David Price will start against  Jeff Samardzija. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Verlander
Verlander

Justin Verlander threw about 45 pitches in a simulated game yesterday. Team officials had hoped he would throw 60 pitches, but Verlander called the session off early because of shoulder fatigue. Verlander said the shoulder didn’t hurt, and also said he experienced no problem from the strained triceps muscle that sent him to the disabled list for the first time in his career. The shortened session means that Verlander will likely need to pitch another simulated game… or make a minor-league rehab start… before returning to the rotation.

Peralta
Peralta

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Cardinals 4-2 last night. Wily Peralta gave up all four Saint Louis runs over five innings, and took the loss. The Brewers play at Saint Louis again this afternoon. Mike Fiers will start against John Lackey.

Milwaukee centerfielder Carlos Gomez limped off the field in the ninth inning of last night’s game with a strained hamstring. Manager Ron Roenike says Gomez won’t play today, as they wait to see how serious the injury is.

Finlandia Swept at Kalamazoo
The Finlandia baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at Kalamazoo College by identical 20-0 scores yesterday afternoon. The Lions will play two at Hope College this afternoon.

The Finlandia softball team plays two at Lakeland College this afternoon.

NHL – Red Wings Open Playoffs Against Lightning
The Detroit Red Wings will open the NHL playoffs tonight in Tampa against the Lightning. Petr Mrazek will start in goal for Detroit. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons
Detroit Pistons LogoWith no playoffs in their future, the Detroit Pistons closed their season with a strong 112-90 victory over the New York Knicks last night. After a 5-23 start, the Pistons played .500 ball over the final two-thirds of the season to finish with a record of 32-50 – their best record in the past six seasons. The Knicks won just 17 games, and finished the worst season in team history.
