Tigers Earn Comeback Win – Friday Sports Wrap

The Boston Red Sox scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to break open a 1-1 game yesterday afternoon, but the Detroit Tigers responded with three in the bottom of the inning to earn a 4-3 victory. Matt Boyd turned in another effective start, giving up one on five hits over six innings. Alex Wilson pitched a scoreless seventh, but gave up three straight singles to start the eighth. One run scored before he left the game. Another scored on a wild pitch by Justin Wilson, but was charged to Alex. The Tigers began the bottom of the eighth with four straight hits. Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez singled runs home, and the winning run scored when Andrew Romine drew a bases-loaded walk. Cabrera’s RBI was the 1,000th of his career.

That series continues tonight in Detroit. Michael Fulmer will start against former Tiger Rick Porcello. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Cleveland also won, so the Indians still lead the Tigers by six games in the American League Central Division.

As expected, the Tigers brought outfielder Alex Presley up from Toledo yesterday. He started yesterday’s game in left field, with Andrew Romine in center.

The Chicago Cubs opened a big early lead, and held off the Milwaukee Brewers 9-6 yesterday afternoon. Zach Davies lasted just four innings, giving up seven runs on 10 hits. Milwaukee’s comeback began when Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Hernan Perez added a solo shot in the sixth.

The Brewers open an interleague series against the Mariners in Seattle tonight. Brent Suter will make his major league debut for the Brewers. Wade LeBlanc will pitch for the Mariners.

The Detroit Lions fell to the Cincinnati Bengals 30-14 in exhibition play last night. Matthew Stafford completed eight of 11 passes for 113 yards. Detroit’s only touchdown came in the final minute of the game, when Dwayne Washington scored on a five-yard run.

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Oakland Raiders 20-12 in preseason play last night. Eddie Lacy rushed for 45 yards on nine carries, and scored touchdown. As expected, Aaron Rodgers did not play, nor did linebackers Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers. Brett Hundley started at quarterback, but left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury.

The high school volleyball season opens tomorrow.
– Calumet and Hancock compete at the Kingsford Invitational.
– Houghton travels to the Soo Invitational.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell, Dollar Bay, Baraga, and L’Anse play at the West Iron County Invitational.

The Aspirus Great Deer Chase will take place tomorrow, with 15 and 30-mile mountain bike races on the Swedetown trails, along with 40-yard, two and four-mile kids races. This year, the adult races will roll out in front of the Big 150 Parade, celebrating Calumet Township’s sesquicentennial. Online registration has closed, but onsite registration and bib pickup will take place this evening between 6:30 and 8:00, and tomorrow morning between 9:00 and 10:00 at Cross Country Sports in Calumet. Kids’ race registration is from 6:30 until 8:00 this evening, and 7:30 until 8:30 tomorrow morning.

Hancock Driving Park Sign
The new sign at the fields at the Hancock Driving Park will officially be unveiled today at noon. The ceremony will take place inside the pedestrian entrance north of the chalet, between the softball and little league fields. The sign identifies the Gordy Schaaf Softball Field, and the Bill Givens Memorial Little League Field, and contains narrative text about the honorees. All are invited.

Guts Keweenaw Classic
The seventh annual Keweenaw Classic three-person Guts Frisbee tournament will be held tomorrow at Calumet Waterworks Park. Action begins at 11:00. The Classic is a Hat Tourney, where the players who show up are divided into evenly-matched teams. You do not need to be a member of an established team to take part, and players of all skill levels are welcome.
