In high school cross country, the Calumet Invitational scheduled for yesterday was postponed because of poor weather. It will be run Thursday afternoon on the Swedetown Trails.

The Cleveland Indians clinched the American League Central Division title with a 7-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers last night. The game was close until the late innings. Each team got a two-run homer in the second – the Tigers’ came from J.D. Martinez. Cleveland added two in the top of the fifth – spot starter Buck Farmer’s last inning. Detroit got one back in the bottom of the inning. Each team scored one in the seventh. Cleveland broke the game open with two in the eighth.

The Tigers continue that home set against the Indians tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Mike Clevinger. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The loss dropped the Tigers two games behind the idle Baltimore Orioles in the race for the final American League wild card playoff berth.

Jonathan Villar hit two home runs, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Texas Rangers 8-3 last night. Matt Garza gave up three runs over six innings to get the win.

That series continues in Arlington tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against A.J. Griffin.
