Tigers Fall after Retiring Trammell’s Number – Monday Sports Wrap

In high school volleyball today, Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Wakefield-Marenisco.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost to the Chicago White Sox 7-2 yesterday. Detroit outhit Chicago 12-11, but left a dozen runners on base. Jordan Zimmermann struggled through six innings, allowing five runs.

The Tigers have today off, and open a series at Kansas City tomorrow. Matthew Boyd will start against Jakob Junis. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has called up reliever Josh Smoker from Toledo. He fills the roster spot vacated when Ryan Carpenter was sent down.

Before yesterday’s game, the Tigers retired jersey number three, which was worn for 20 seasons by new Baseball Hall of Fame member Alan Trammell. He joins Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg, Al Kaline, Sparky Anderson, Hal Newhouser, and Willie Horton on the list of players whose numbers won’t be used again. Tigers great Ty Cobb played before uniform numbers were used.

The Milwaukee Brewers scored six times in the third inning, and held on for a 7-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday. Mike Moustakas and Manny Piña each blasted two-run homers in the big inning. Chase Anderson turned in four scoreless innings, gave up a single run in the fifth, and left in the sixth as Pittsburgh scored three more times.

The Brewers also have today off, and begin a series at Cincinnati tomorrow. Junior Guerra will pitch against Anthony DeSclafani.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers have plugged a gap at inside linebacker by obtaining Antonio Morrison from the Indianapolis Colts. In exchange, the Colts get reserve defensive back Lenzy Pipkins.
