Tigers Fall in 9th – Saturday Sports Wrap

The Team Michigan squads split yesterday’s games at the High School National Invitational Tournament in Minnesota…
• The Juniors lost to the Wisconsin Juniors 7-1. The Juniors are now 1-1 in pool play, and will face the Minnesota Seniors this afternoon at 3:30 Eastern Time.
• The Seniors edged the Minnesota Seniors 4-3. Howell’s Jack L’Esperance had a natural hat trick. Houghton’s Cam Markham had two assists. The Seniors are 2-0 in pool play, and will face the Wisconsin Seniors this afternoon at 1:15 Eastern Time.

In NBA Tournament first round games yesterday…

In the Eastern Conference…
• The Hawks upended the Celtics 130-122. Boston leads that series 2-1.
• The Knicks shut down the Cavaliers 99-79. New York takes a 2-1 lead in that set.

In the Western Conference…
• The Nuggets outscored the Timberwolves 120-111. Denver opens up a 3-0 lead in that series.

• The 76ers visit the Nets. Philly leads that series 3-0.
• The Heat entertain the Bucks. That set is tied 1-1.

In the Western Conference…

In NHL opening round playoff games last night…

MLB

Ryan Mountcastle scored on a fielder’s choice off Jason Foley in the bottom of the ninth, as the Orioles edged the Tigers 2-1 last night. The loss spoiled a good start by Michael Lorenzen, who gave up three hits over five scoreless innings. Baltimore took the lead with a run off José Cisnero in the seventh. Javier Báez singled home Akil Baddoo to tie the game in the top of the ninth,

The Tigers visit the Orioles again tonight. Joey Wentz will start against Kyle Gibson. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers fell 5-3 to the Red Sox last evening. Freddy Peralta pitched into the sixth, gave up four runs, and took the loss. Rowdy Tellez homered.

The Brewers entertain the Sox again this evening. Wade Miley will start against Garrett Whitlock.

The damage to Milwaukee center fielder Garrett Mitchell’s shoulder has turned out to be worse than anticipated. He might need surgery, which could cost him the rest of the season.

NFL

Four Detroit Lions have been suspended by the NFL for violating the league’s gambling policy.

Wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore drew full-season suspensions, and will need to petition for reinstatement afterward. The Lions proceeded to release both players.

Receivers Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams each received six-game suspensions. Their violations were described as “technical,” with Williams’ transgression involving an online bet he made while at a Lions facility, which would have been acceptable had he placed it elsewhere.
