At the third Annual Houghton High School Invitational Soccer Tournament Saturday, the Gremlins fell to Kingsford 1-0 in the title match. Houghton defeated Copper Country Christian 4-2 and Bayside Escanaba 5-0 in their earlier games. Ethan Heckel scored twice for the Gremlins, and Arobindo Ghosh, Josh Bennett, Illya Velat, Ian Hong, Caleb Wiitanen and Carter Kilpela each scored once.

The Tigers lost to the Astros 9-2 yesterday. Eduardo Rodriguez gave up just one run over the first four innings, but left as Houston plated three in the fifth, and took the loss. Kerry Carpenter and Parker Meadows each had two hits for Detroit.

Detroit pitcher Matt Manning tweaked his back late in his start Friday night. His next scheduled start on Wednesday is up in the air.

The Brewers scored five runs in the fifth inning, and held on to edge the Padres 5-4 last night. Andruw Monasterio had two hits, drove in a run and scored a run. Freddy Peralta pitched into the sixth, and allowed two runs on two hits. He struck out nine.

The Brewers host the Padres again this afternoon. Adrian Houser will start against Michael Wacha.

The Cubs won, and the Reds lost, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division stands at four games over Chicago, and six over Cincinnati.

The Packers closed out their preseason campaign with 19-15 victory over the Seahawks yesterday. Jordan Love completed 9 of 15 passes for 63 yards and a touchdown. The Green Bay rushing attack piled up 164 yards on the ground.

Roster cut-downs are beginning in the NFL. The Lions released eight-year veteran defensive tackle Christian Covington yesterday. He played the last two seasons with the Chargers.
