MLB
The Chicago Cubs broke open a close game with three runs in the fifth inning, and went on to defeat the Detroit Tigers 8-2 last night. Detroit scored first, on a Ronny Rodriguez single in the second inning. Francisco Liriano cruised through the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth. The Cubs scored another run off Buck Farmer in the sixth, then added four more with a pair of home runs off Victor Alcántara in the ninth.

The Tigers host the Chicago White Sox this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start against James Shields. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Michael Fulmer will rejoin the Tigers’ rotation on Friday. He’ll make his first start since he went on the disabled list in mid-July because of a left oblique strain.

Freddy Peralta turned in seven scoreless innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 yesterday. Peralta also drove in a run with his first major league hit. Christian Yelich homered for Milwaukee, which moved to three games behind the Cubs in the National League Central, and is in a virtual tie with Saint Louis for the top wild card playoff berth.

The Brewers have today off, and host the Pittsburgh Pirates tomorrow night. Wade Miley will pitch against Joe Musgrove.
