The Detroit Tigers erupted for nine runs in the first two innings, and blew out the Houston Astros 14-6 Friday night. Houston took a quick lead, scoring two runs off Matt Boyd in the top of the first. Boyd gave up another run in the third. He completed five innings, and got the win. Detroit tied the score in the bottom of the first, then blew the game open with seven in the second. The big blow was a three-run home run by Tyler Collins. Justin Upton and James McCann homered later in the game.

The Tigers host the Astros again tonight. Justin Verlander will pitch against Mike Fiers. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit signed veteran left-hander Cesar Ramos to a minor-league contract Friday. Ramos has pitched for the Padres, Rays, Angels and Rangers. He was designated for assignment by Texas July 22nd, and elected to become a free agent.

Junior Guerra fell just short of a complete game, as the Milwaukee Brewers got past the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 Friday night. Guerra was dominant through eight innings, but faltered in the ninth, giving up a run before giving way to Jeremy Jeffress with one out. Jeffress shut the door and earned his 25th save of the season. Guerra improved to 7-2, and was watched by scouts from several contending teams looking to trade for starting pitchers before Monday’s deadline. Chris Carter’s two-run homer in the first inning gave Guerra all the runs he needed. Keon Broxton doubled home an insurance run in the sixth.

The Brewers entertain the Pittsburgh Pirates again tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Jameson Taillon.

After the game, Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said Ryan Braun could return to the lineup as early as tonight. Braun has missed two days because of soreness in his right side.

If Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy is traded before Monday’s deadline, it probably won’t be to the Detroit Tigers. Reports say the Tigers explored the possibility, but the price was too high.
