Morning Sports for Friday, July 11th:

The Tigers scored eight runs in the fifth inning, and pounded the Royals 16-4 last night. Torii Hunter homered, and 11 Detroit batters collected hits. Drew Smyly earned the win. He gave up single runs in the second and fourth innings… then left as K-C scored twice more in the seventh.

The Tigers continue that set at Kansas City tonight. Anibal Sanchez will start against Danny Duffy. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Detroit’s lead in the American League Central now stands at five-and-a-half games over the Royals.

Brewers Drop Fifth Straight
Milwaukee Brewers Circle LogoThe Brewers lost their fifth straight game yesterday… 9-1 to the Phillies. Matt Garza didn’t give up a hit over the first six innings… pitched out of a jam in the seventh. He left with the bases loaded in the eighth… and Philadelphia proceeded to score seven runs off Will Smith and Brandon Kintzler.

The Brewers host the Cardinals tonight. Yovani Gallardo will pitch against Joe Kelly.

St. Louis also lost yesterday… so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central remains at two games.

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last night…
– At the Stanton Field, the Wildcats outslugged Wolverine-Orbit 16-9.
– At the Toivola Field, BlueSky Health scored four runs in the sixth inning to seal an 11-9 victory over Mosquito Inn. Dave Wesa and Brian Juopperi each had three hits for BlueSky.

The Leo Durocher Memorial Wood Bat Tournament will be held at the Stanton Field this weekend. Tomorrow, Wolverine-Orbit faces Superior Waters Fly Shop  at 10:00… Blue Sky Health takes on the Tri-City North Stars from Negaunee at 12:30… Mosquito Inn plays Channing at 3:00… and Pat’s Foods meets the Stanton Wildcats at 5:30. The semifinals will be played on Sunday. The winners of tomorrow’s first two games will play at 11:00. The winners of the second two games will play at 1:30. The championship game will start at 4:00.

The Detroit Red Wings have signed Dan Cleary to a one-year deal said to be worth 1.5-million dollars. Cleary struggled last season, but team officials say they hope he’ll bounce back this year.

Lazy Days Laurium 2014 LogoLazy Days to Host Free Throw Tourney
The Lazy Days of Laurium will host a free throw tournament for kids ages five through 18. Competition in various age divisions begins tomorrow at 1:00 as part of the festival at the George Gipp Recreation Area. No advance registration is required.

Run the Keweenaw This Weekend
Run the Keweenaw LogoThe annual Run the Keweenaw trail running event will be held this weekend. Registration and bib pickup opens tonight at 5:00 at the Copper Harbor Community Center… and resumes tomorrow morning at 7:00 at the Eagle Harbor Town Hall. The three adult events include the Mount Baldy Hill Climb tomorrow morning at 9:00… the 12k Copper Harbor Trails Challenge tomorrow afternoon at 5:00… and the 25k Carl Olson Memorial Adventure Run Sunday morning at 8:00. Strawberry Festival5k/2k Run Saturday in Chassell
The Chassell Strawberry Festival is hosting a five-k and two-k run for the first time this year. The run will begin tomorrow morning at 8:00. The cost is $20.00 per runner… $10.00 for kids ages 14 and younger. You can register online, or between 7:00 and 7:45 tomorrow morning at the Chassell trailhead, behind the Chassell Heritage Center.
