Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team lost 3-0 at Wisconsin-Superior last night. The Lions took early leads in the first two games, and led midway through the third game, but the Yellowjackets came back each time. Kasia Holmstrom had eight kills for the Lions, and Jessica Diaz recorded 11 digs.

After making 48 saves in two games, Finlandia goaltender Hayley Makela has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Patrick Miles has been named the ACAA Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. He had two assists in his first game as a Lion.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers snapped their five-game losing streak by pounding the Kansas City Royals 13-2 last night. Detroit put the game away early, scoring seven runs in the second inning. The Tigers blasted six home runs – two each by JaCoby Jones and John Hicks. Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez had to leave the game after Royals leadoff hitter Whit Merrifield scorched a line drive off his leg. Myles Jay earned his first major league win in relief.

The Tigers host the Royals one more time tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Jason Hammel. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Cincinnati Reds 9-3 last night. Cincy broke the game open with five runs in the seventh inning off Jacob Barnes and Wei-Chung Wang. Former Brewer Scooter Gennett’s three-run homer was the big blow in the inning.

The Brewers conclude that series at Cincinnati this afternoon. Matt Garza will start against Luis Castillo.

The Cubs also lost, so Milwaukee continues to trail Chicago by three-and-a-half games in the National League Central Division race.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Robbie Russo to a two-year, two-way deal. Russo appeared in 19 games for Detroit late last season. He is expected to begin this season at Grand Rapids.

NFL
Roster jockeying continues in advance of this weekend’s opening of the NFL season. Yesterday, the Green Bay Packers signed defensive tackle Quinton Dial, who had been cut by the San Francisco 49ers despite starting 26 games over the past two seasons. To make room, Green Bay released defensive tackle Christian Ringo.

Our high school football coverage continues Friday night, as Hancock entertains Northland Pines. The pregame show will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Our coverage of Finlandia University athletics begins Saturday, when the Lions football team hosts Lawrence University. The pregame show will begin around 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
