Tigers Salvage One from Sox – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school softball yesterday, Lake Linden-Hubbell and Hancock split their games. The Bulldogs took the first, 10-5, but the Lakes claimed the nightcap, 13-2. Calumet plays at a tournament at Kingsford tomorrow.

In high school baseball, Hancock edged Houghton 5-4 yesterday afternoon. Houghton plays at Superior Central today.

MLB – Tigers Claim One from Sox
Kyle Lobstein and the Detroit Tigers shut down the Chicago White Sox 4-1 yesterday. Lobstein gave up just one unearned run on five hits before leaving with two outs in the eighth inning. Joakim Soria retired the final Chicago batter in the eighth, and then pitched a perfect ninth. Detroit took an early lead when Sox’ starter Jose Quintana walked in a run in the first inning. They added a run on a Miguel Cabrera groundout in the fifth, then sealed the win with RBI singles by Victor Martinez and Nick Castellanos in the eighth.

The Tigers return home to host the Kansas City Royals in a weekend series beginning tonight. David Price will start against Yordano Ventura. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesias missed yesterday’s game, after aggravating his groin injury in Wednesday’s loss. Manager Brad Ausmus says Iglesias will likely miss tonight’s contest, as well.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers 14-4 yesterday. Yasmani Grandal hit two three-run homers, and drove in eight for L-A. Mike Fiers struggled through five innings, giving up five runs and taking the loss. Adam Lind homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers host the Chicago Cubs in a three-game set beginning tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Jason Hammel.
