MLB – Tigers Slammed by Oakland
Ben Zobrist’s grand slam in the seventh inning powered the Oakland Athletics to a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers last night. The Tigers had taken a three-run lead in the fourth inning, on a bases-loaded wild pitch and a two-run single by Nick Castellanos. Detroit starter Alfredo Simon didn’t allow a hit through six innings, although he did walk the bases loaded in the fourth inning. He tired in the seventh, though, and he left the game with the bases loaded, and one run in. Angel Nesbitt relieved him, and gave up the grand slam on his second pitch.

Verlander
Verlander

The Tigers have lost five in a row, and eight of their last 10. The host the Athletics again tonight. Anibal Sanchez will start against Sonny Gray. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Justin Verlander will make a second rehab start for the Toledo Mud Hens on Saturday. If things go well, he could return to the Tigers’ rotation next week. He’s missed the entire season with a strained triceps. Reliever Bruce Rondon could rejoin the club as early as Friday. His fastball hit 97 miles per hour in a relief appearance for Toledo last night. Rondon hasn’t pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery before last season.

The Tigers said goodbye to infielder Hernan Perez yesterday. Perez was designated for assignment, and was claimed off waivers by the Milwaukee Brewers. The Tigers called journeyman utility player Josh Wilson up from Toledo to take his place. Detroit also called up outfielder Daniel Fields for his first major league experience. Fields is filling in for Rajai Davis, who’s on paternity leave. As expected, pitcher Buck Farmer has been sent back to Toledo.

Cravy
Cravy

Tyler Cravy gave up just one run over seven innings in his major league debut last night. That wasn’t good enough, though, as the Brewers lost to the Saint Louis Cardinals 1-0. Cravy struck out six, and allowed just four hits. Milwaukee did mount a threat with runners at first and third in the ninth inning, but Aramis Ramirez crounded into a double play to end the game.

The Brewers wrap up that series in Saint Louis this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will start against John Lackey.
