MLB

The Tigers broke their four-game losing streak with a 7-5 victory over the Royals last night. Beau Brieske gave up three runs over the first two innings, then settled down and allowed no more through the sixth. He earned the win when Detroit scored four runs in the top of the seventh – an inning in which Miguel Cabrera stole third base, and ran home after an errant throw. Spencer Torkelson had three hits.

The Tigers visit the Royals again this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will start against Brady Singer. Coverage will begin at 1:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers claimed a 6-3 victory over the Twins last night, in a game that was delayed several times because of rain. Andrew McCutcheon homered.

The Brewers wrap up that quick series in Minnesota this afternoon. Aaron Ashby will start against Joe Ryan.

Hunter Renfroe returned from the injured list yesterday. Pitcher Chi Chi González was designated for assignment.

Milwaukee reliever Josh Hader will not take part in next week’s All Star Game, citing family responsibilities.

NHL

Former Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill has a new job. He’s joining the Lightning as an assistant coach, filling the vacancy created when former Tampa Bay assistant Derek Lalonde accepted the head coaching position in Detroit.

Fishing

The Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club is hosting its annual Free Kids Fishing Derby Saturday at the Swedetown pond. Kids can fish from 9:30 until noon, and then enjoy lunch as prizes are handed out. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. A few rods and reels are available, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own. Free bait will be provided.

Running

This year’s Hancock Canal Run will take place Saturday. Distances for runs and walks range from a two-mile fun run and walk to a half-marathon. Onsite registration and bib pickup will be open Friday after between 3 and 8 at Quincy Green. Bib pickup will also be open Saturday morning between 6 and 8:45. There will be no race-day registration.
