GLHL

The Great Lakes Hockey League tournament takes place this weekend in Fond du Lac. As regular-season league champions, the Pioneers are the top seed, and will open against the eighth-seed Mutineers this morning at 11:00 Eastern Time. The Wolverines are seeded fifth, and will face fourth-seed Eagle River this morning at 11:30 Eastern.

Local Hockey

The annual Northern Lights hockey game between the Michigan Upper Peninsula Veterans Hockey Club and the Minnesota Warriors will be played tomorrow night. The contest is a fundraiser for Equipment Loans of the Keweenaw. The MTU Pep Band will be on hand. Tickets are five dollars for adults. First responders, law enforcement, veterans and children age 12 and under can attend for free. Face-off is at 7:00 at Dee Stadium.

College Basketball

The semifinals of the NCAA Division One women’s basketball tournament will be played tonight. South Carolina takes on North Carolina State at 7:00, and Iowa faces Connecticut at 9:30.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Islanders tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Even though Detroit was idle last evening, they lost ground in the playoff race. A victory last night by the Islanders vaulted them into the final wild card position. Both the Wings and the Capitals are one standings point behind. Each team has seven regular-season games remaining. New York has six.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Grizzlies this evening.

MLB

The Tigers split their doubleheader with the Mets yesterday.

In the opener, they fell behind early, but came back to earn a 6-3 win in 11 innings. Riley Green’s solo homer in the eighth tied the contest. Colt Keith drove Green home with the game-winner in the top of the 11th, and Gio Urshela’s single plated two insurance runs. In his first start after missing two years because of injuries, Casey Mize pitched into the fifth, and gave up three runs on five hits.

The Mets returned the favor in the nightcap, scoring two runs off Alex Faedo in the bottom of the ninth to claim a 2-1 victory. The late meltdown ruined a stellar start from Matt Manning, who came up from Toledo, and pitched hitless ball into the sixth inning. Javier Báez singled home Colt Keith in the second inning for Detroit’s only run.

The Tigers host the Athletics in their home opener today. Tarik Skubal will pitch against J.P. Sears. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit relief pitcher Miguel Díaz has been claimed off waivers by the Astros. Díaz was one of the last pitchers cut by the Tigers before the season opened. Because he is out of minor league options, he had to be designated for assignment.

The Brewers had yesterday off, and host the Mariners this evening. Freddy Peralta will start against Logan Gilbert.
