Tigers Stun Verlander, Astros – Thursday Sports Wrap

MLB

Justin Verlander gave up just two hits over nine innings for the Houston Astros last night – but both were home runs, and the Detroit Tigers pulled out an improbable 2-1 victory. Ronny Rodriguez homered in the fifth, and John Hicks gave Detroit the lead in the top of the ninth. Houston’s only run came on a Robinson Chirinos shot off Tyler Alexander in the seventh. Chirinos also provided a dramatic ending to the contest. Needing only a triple to complete the cycle, he drove a ball to right-center field. Travis Demeritte dove for it, and missed. Center fielder Harold Castro chased the ball down, and made a perfect throw to second baseman Gordon Beckham, who relayed it to Dawel Lugo at third base just in time to tag Chirinos out.

The sports betting database BetLabsSports.com deemed the win the biggest upset in Major League Baseball in the past 15 years.

The Tigers conclude that series at Houston tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Gerrit Cole. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers broke their three-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Saint Louis Cardinals last night. The Crew got off to a fast start, scoring four times in the first inning, powered by a three-run Mike Moustakas homer. Adrian Houser pitched into the sixth, and gave up three runs. The game ended after the seventh inning because of rain.

The Brewers have today off, and will host the Arizona Diamondbacks tomorrow night. Jordan Lyles will start against Merrill Kelly.
