Tigers Trade Greene, Castellanos – Thursday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Detroit Tigers said “goodbye” to veteran outfielder Nicholas Castellanos and closer Shane Greene yesterday.

Greene went to the Atlanta Braves, in exchange for two prospects. Pitcher Joey Wentz was Atlanta’s seventh-rated prospect, and is expected to join the rotation at Double-A Erie. Outfielder Travis Demeritte hit 20 home runs in Triple-A this season, and could be added to the Tigers’ roster.

The Castellanos deal was announced 42 seconds before the 4:00 deadline. He goes to the Cubs, in exchange for pitching prospects Paul Richan and Alex Lange. Both were listed among Chicago’s top 30 prospects. Castellanos will be a free agent at the end of the season, and was not expected to remain with Detroit.

Starting pitcher Matthew Boyd was not traded, and will remain with the team.

The remaining Tigers pounded the Los Angeles Angels 9-1 yesterday. Rookie catcher Jake Rogers hit his first major league home run. Brandon Dixon and Gordon Beckham also homered. Daniel Norris gave up just three hits over five shutout innings.

The Tigers have today off, and begin a series against the Rangers in Texas tomorrow night. Tyler Alexander will pitch against Lance Lynn. Pregame coverage starts at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers added some pitching depth before the deadline. The Crew traded former all star Jesús Aguilar to the Rays, in exchange for Jake Faria, who has worked as both a starter and reliever. The departure of Aguilar means that Ryan Braun will get playing time at first base. Milwaukee sent their third-ranked prospect – infielder Mauricio Dubon – to the Giants, in exchange for veteran Drew Pomeranz and journeyman Ray Black. Pomeranz has struggled as a starter this season, with a record of 2-9, and an ERA of 5.68. Pomeranz will be kept on the major league roster. Faria and Black have been assigned to Triple-A San Antonio. Corbin Burnes was also sent down to the Missions.

Newly-reacquired starter Jordan Lyles gave up one run over five innings, as the Brewers defeated the Oakland Athletics 4-2 last night. Lorenzo Cain homered.

The Brewers wrap up that interleague set in Oakland this afternoon. Chase Anderson will start against Homer Bailey.
