MLB
Nicholas Castellanos drove in five runs, as the Detroit Tigers pounded the Kansas City Royals 9-3 last night. Castellanos blasted a critical triple as Detroit scored five times in the second inning. He added two home runs later in the game. Matthew Boyd began his return from Toledo by giving up three runs in the first inning. He then pitched shutout ball through the sixth. Shane Greene and Alex Wilson finished up.

The Tigers have won four straight, and continue that series at Kansas City tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Jason Hammel. Pregame coverage begins at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Before the game, the Tigers traded outfielder J.D. Martinez to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In exchange, they get three minor-leaguers – Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcantara and Jose King. Lugo is the most advanced. He’s a third baseman who can also play shortstop, and is ranked as the Diamondbacks’ fourth-best prospect by MLB.com. Lugo will likely be assigned to Double-A Erie. Alcantara and King are Single-A level infielders.

The Pittsburgh Pirates scored four runs in the sixth inning, and came from behind to edge the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 last evening. Junior Guerra cruised through five shutout innings, but gave up three runs on two home runs in the sixth. Oliver Drake relieved him, and allowed the game-winning run. Travis Shaw homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers continue that series at Pittsburgh tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Gerrit Cole.

Milwaukee catcher Steven Vogt suffered a knee injury in that collision at home plate Monday night. He’ll miss at least a month. Jett Bandy has been called up from Colorado Springs. The Brewers also brought pitcher Michael Blazek up from the Sky Sox, and sent pitcher Tyler Webb and infielder Yadiel Rivera down.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed forward Martin Frk to a one-year, two-way deal. Frk was the Grand Rapid Griffins’ leading scorer last season.

NFL
Detroit Lions defensive end Armonty Bryant has been suspended for the first four games of the 2017 season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Details of the violation have not been released.

MTU
Former Michigan Tech goaltender Josh Robinson has been hired as the goaltending coach for the Florida Everblades of the East Coast Hockey League. Robinson graduated from MTU in 2012. He’s spent the past five years playing in the minor leagues and overseas. The Everblades are affiliated with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Alston Tractor Races
The second annual Alston Tractor Races will be held Saturday on Hoover Road near the ball diamond. Time trials begin at 10:00, and races will follow. Trophies will be awarded for first through fourth places. Kids’ lawn mower races will be held after the tractor races. Concessions will be available.
