Tigers Win Fifth Straight – Sunday Sports Wrap

The Detroit Tigers won their fifth straight game Saturday, edging the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2. Justin Verlander gave up two runs on just four hits over seven innings to earn the win. He struck out eight. Justin Wilson pitched a scoreless eighth, and Francisco Rodriguez collected his 23rd save. Jose Iglesias gave Detroit an early lead with an RBI single in the second inning. Ian Kinsler hit his 15th home run of the season in the fifth. Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s sacrifice fly in the sixth drove in Justin Upton with the winning run.

The Tigers conclude that series at Tampa Bay this afternoon. Mike Pelfrey will start against Chris Archer. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped a 3-0 decision to the Saint Louis Cardinals Saturday. The only scoring came in the fourth inning, when Kolten Wong drove in two runs with a triple off Jimmy Nelson, then scored on a bunt single by Greg Garcia.

The Brewers wrap up that series against the Cardinals in Saint Louis this afternoon. Chase Anderson will pitch against Michael Wacha.

The Detroit Pistons continued free agent shopping Saturday by signing a four-year, 42-million dollar deal with power forward Jim Leuer. Leuer is a five-year veteran who played for Phoenix last season. He’s also made stops in Memphis, Cleveland and Milwaukee, after playing college ball at Wisconsin.
