Tigers Win Home Opener – Friday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Detroit Tigers edged the Kansas City Royals 5-4 in their home opener yesterday. Spencer Turnbull turned in a quality start, allowing three runs over six innings, while striking out 10. Niko Goodrum drove in three runs. Shane Greene earned his fifth save.

The Tigers have today off, and host the Royals again tomorrow afternoon. Matt Moore will start against Jorge López. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and will host the Chicago Cubs tonight. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against José Quintana.

The Brewers added some bullpen depth yesterday by claiming veteran Donnie Hart off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hart pitched for the Baltimore Orioles the past three seasons. He’s been assigned to Triple-A San Antonio.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings’ six-game winning streak ended last night with a 4-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Matt Puempel scored Detroit’s only goal – his first of the season. Jimmy Howard made 43 saves. The Wings will wrap up their season at home tomorrow night against the Buffalo Sabres.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight. Blake Griffin’s status remains questionable – he’s missed three games with a sore knee. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University baseball team will play doubleheaders at Wisconsin-Stout tomorrow and Sunday.

Gibson Cup

The Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines will wrap up their season in the Gibson Cup series this weekend. Game one will be tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum. Game two will be played tomorrow at 7:30 at the Dee. Game three, if needed, will be played Sunday at 6:30 at the Colosseum. Hear all the games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
