Turnbull Sparkles in Tigers Scrimmage – Friday Sports Wrap

Spencer Turnbull threw four scoreless innings in yesterday’s Detroit Tigers intrasquad scrimmage. He retired all 12 batters he faced, striking out six. C.J. Cron hit two home runs.

It looks as if pitcher Daniel Norris will be ready to start the season. Norris has missed training camp because he tested positive for COVID-19, but says he’s waiting for test results that should clear him. He’s been working out, and has reported no symptoms.

The Tigers open a week from today at Cincinnati. Hear their games on 99.3 The Lift.

Logan Morrison hit a three-run homer off Freddy Peralta in yesterday’s Milwaukee Brewers scrimmage. Peralta lasted nearly four innings. The other starter, Josh Lindblom, gave up a run over five innings.

NFL

With NFL training camps scheduled to open a week from Tuesday, the players association report that 72 players have tested positive for COVID-19.

NHL

Heavy rain flooded parts of Rogers Place in Edmonton last evening. Officials say the damage will not affect plans to use the facility as one of the NHL’s two hubs when the season re-opens. Teams are scheduled to report to Edmonton and Toronto July 26th, with the first games scheduled for August 1st.

NCAA

The NCAA is recommending that all football players be tested for COVID-19 within 72 hours of each game. Updated guidelines were released yesterday, along with a statement by organization president Mark Emmert saying that COVID-19 data is currently pointing in the wrong direction – “If there is to be college sports in the fall, we need to get a much better handle on the pandemic.”

There are reports that the CAA will call off its fall sports seasons. It would become the fourth NCAA Division I conference to opt out because of COVID-19 concerns, following the Ivy League, the Patriot League, and the Mid-Eastern Conference. All play football in the FCS.
