Turnbull Tosses No-Hitter – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Houghton fell to Marquette 12-5.
• Calumet swept Negaunee 10-6 and 8-5.

In softball yesterday…
• Hancock took two from Lake Linden-Hubbell, 10-3 and 11-6. For the Bulldogs, Sophie Heinonen had three triples and a single in the first game, and Tarynn Brey had three singles and a triple. Heinonen added a home run in the nightcap. For the Lakes, Clara Colombe had three hits in the opener, and Olivia Shank had two in the nightcap. Kaydence Kilpela was the winning pitcher in both contests, striking out a total of 19 batters.
• Houghton swept Baraga 20-8 and 14-4.
• Calumet split its doubleheader against Westwood, falling 6-5 in the first game, and coming back to take the second 9-8.

In golf yesterday, local girls teams at the Calumet Invitational – no report.

On the golf schedule today, the WestPAC championships will be played at Iron Mountain.

In track, the local Upper Peninsula Division Three regional meet will be held today in Baraga. The Division One regional will be held tomorrow in Houghton, and the Division Two regional will take place Friday at West Iron County.

College Football

Jim Pawelec has joined the Finlandia University football coaching staff. He will be the Lions’ offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Pawelec spent the past three seasons on the staff at North Carolina Wesleyan. He grew up in Big Bend, Wisconsin, and played college ball at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

In NBA tournament play-in games last night…
• The Pacers outscored the Hornets 144-117.
• The Celtics downed the Wizards 118-100.

• The Grizzlies host the Spurs.
• The Lakers entertain the Warriors.

NHL

In the NHL playoffs yesterday…
• The Penguins edged the Islanders 2-1. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Lightning defeated the Panthers 3-1. Florida leads that set 2-0.
• The Golden Knights shut down the Wild 3-1. That series is tied 1-1.

Today…
• The Bruins host the Capitals. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Hurricanes welcome the Predators. Carolina leads that set 1-0.
• The Avalanche entertain the Blues. Colorado leads that set 1-0.
• The Jets visit the Oilers in the opening game of that series.

Jeff Blashill will stay on as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings. Saying he’s seeing the kind of progress the team needs, general manager Steve Yzerman said yesterday that Blashill’s contract is being extended, although he didn’t say for how long. Assistant coach Dan Bylsma will not return, electing to pursue other opportunities.

Two former Michigan Tech stars will compete at the upcoming IIHF Men’s World Championship in Latvia. Matt Roy of the Los Angeles Kings will play for Team USA. Alex Petan is on Italy’s national team. He’s played professionally in Germany and Austria for the past four seasons.

MLB

Spencer Turnbull tossed a no-hitter, as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Seattle Mariners 5-0 last night. Turnbull walked just two batters, and struck out nine, in his first career complete game. Jeimer Candelario homered, doubled, and turned in the defensive highlight of the game, diving to stop Mitch Haniger’s hard-hit grounder along the third base line, and throwing him out at first. It’s the first no-hitter for Detroit since Justin Verlander turned the trick 10 years ago.

That series concludes in Seattle tonight. Tarik Skubal will face Logan Gilbert. Coverage begins at 9:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ offensive challenges continued last night in a 2-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals. The Crew collected just three hits. Brandon Woodruff took the tough loss on the mound, throwing seven innings of shutout ball, before leaving as the Royals scored twice in the eighth.

That quick series wraps up in Kansas City this evening. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Brad Keller.

Christian Yelich was hitless in his return from the injured list last night, after missing most of five weeks with back problems. Pitcher Hoby Milner was sent to Nashville to make room.
