Two One-Hitters as Jeffers Baseball Blanks Ironwood – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Houghton defeated L’Anse twice by identical 12-8 margins. In the opener, Trysten Muma had three hits for the Purple Hornets, and Shawn Gibbons added two. Each scored twice. Logan Dusinki and Ross Biekkola had two hits in the nightcap. For the Gremlins, Gab Carlson had seven hits, six RBI, six runs, and three stolen bases between the two games. Henry Switzer and Hudson Markham each drove in three runs.
 • Hancock took two from Westwood, 10-0 and 13-7.
 • Jeffers blanked Ironwood 7-0 and 6-0. Levi Frahm threw a one-hit complete game in the opener, and struck out five. Cody Turner tossed a one-hitter in the nightcap, and struck out six.

On the baseball schedule today…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Ontonagon.

In baseball tomorrow…
• Calumet and Houghton compete at the Negaunee Invitational.
• Jeffers entertains Westwood.

In softball yesterday…
• Houghton took two from Gwinn, 16-9 and 15-0.
• Calumet v Iron Mountain – no report.
 • Hancock swept Ishpeming 5-1 and 10-0. Sadie Biekkola struck out 11 to earn the win in game one. Brooke Koskela and Sydnie Scholie each had two hits for the Bulldogs. Biekkola threw the shutout and had two hits in game two. Ella Storm had three hits.

• Houghton welcomes L’Anse.
• Hancock hosts Ironwood.
• Baraga visits Lake Linden-Hubbell.

In golf, at the Bulldog Invitational yesterday – no report.

In track, Houghton swept the annual Houghton County track meet at Agassiz Field yesterday.
• On the girls side, Lake Linden-Hubbell finished second followed by Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Calumet, Hancock and Chassell. Lake Linden’s Emily Jokela took the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, and the 300-meter hurdles. Tessa Rautiola of the Gremlins won the 1600 and 3200-meter runs.
• Calumet placed second in the boys meet, followed by Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Chassell, Hancock and Jeffers. Houghton’s Luke Hill won the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Brody Mattila took the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Chase Benson from the Blue Bolts won the 100 and 200-meter dashes.

In NBA Tournament conference semifinals yesterday…

• The Celtics shut down the 76ers 95-86. That series is tied 3-3.

• The Nuggets dispatched the Suns 125-100. Denver wins that series 4-2.

• The Maple Leafs entertain Panthers. Florida leads that series 3-1.

In the Western Conference…
• The Golden Knights welcome the Oilers. That set is tied 2-2.

MLB

The Tigers had yesterday off, and host the Mariners tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Marco Gonzales. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers also had yesterday off, and will open a home set against the Royals this evening. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Josh Taylor.

NFL

The Lions’ improved play last season has earned them more national exposure in the upcoming season. NFL schedules were released yesterday. Detroit will play four nationally-televised games, including a Thursday night tilt against the Chiefs in week one.

Green Bay opens at Chicago in a Sunday afternoon contest in week one. The Packers are scheduled for five prime-time games.

The Thursday night game between the Lions and Packers in week four will be hidden on Amazon Prime. The rematch will be a Thanksgiving Day game in Detroit.

Little League

Keweenaw Little League will hold its spring clean-up day tomorrow. Meet at the field of your choice at 10:00. Bring rakes, gloves and shovels if you have them. Keweenaw Little League will also hold an umpire clinic tomorrow at noon at the Gipp fields. Umpires are encouraged to attend, but not required.
