MLB
Justin Upton’s eighth-inning grand slam powered the Detroit Tigers to a 5-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles Friday night. Upton’s timely blow made a winner of Justin Verlander, who gave up two solo home runs, and struck out 10 over seven innings. Alex Wilson pitched the eighth, and Bruce Rondón came on in the ninth to earn his first save. Jim Adduci also homered for Detroit.

The Tigers have won four straight games, and continue that series at Baltimore tonight. Drew VerHagen will make his second major-league start for Detroit, in place of the injured Michael Fulmer. Wade Miley will counter for the Orioles. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Brandon Woodruff threw 6-1/3rd scoreless innings in his major league debut, as the Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Tampa Bay Rays 2-0 Friday night. Josh Hader, Anthony Swarzak and Cory Knebel completed the shutout. Orlando Arcia celebrated his birthday by scoring in the third inning on an Eric Thames single, and clubbing a solo home run in the eighth.

The Brewers play at Tampa Bay again this evening. Zach Davies will pitch against Alex Cobb.

Milwaukee pitcher Chase Anderson said he felt good after a two-inning simulated game Saturday. He will probably begin a minor league rehab assignment early next week. Anderson is recovering from an oblique strain. The Brewers optioned outfielder Lewis Brinson back to Colorado Springs on Friday to make room on the roster for Woodruff. Catcher Andrew Susac was brought up from the Sky Sox to fill in for Jett Bandy, who is out with a broken rib. Catcher Steven Vogt took batting practice Saturday, and could begin a rehab assignment next week. He’s been out with a knee injury.

Twilight League
The Copper Country Twilight League will conclude its regular season this afternoon, with a final game between Wolverine-Orbit and Superior National Bank-Stanton at 4:00 at the Stanton field.

The Twilight League playoffs begin next week. We’ll broadcast the championship series beginning August 15th on KBear 102.3.
