VB Tourney Wins for Gremlins, Kings, Jets – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball Saturday…
• Houghton won the Rock Invitational at Gladstone. The Gremlins swept Ishpeming, Menominee and Gladstone in pool play, then defeated Carney-Nadeau 2-0 (25-9, 25-19) in bracket play, and Kingsford 2-0 (25-18, 25-23) in the championship match. Jiani Tang had 14 aces and 35 digs. Clea Ollanketo had 11 aces and 24 digs, and Stella Wickstrom racked up 12 kills and 7 blocks.
• Calumet took the title at the Ashwaubenon Invitational. In preliminary play, the Copper Kings defeated Hilbert 2-0 (25-12, 25-11), lost to Green Bay New Lutheran 0-2 (22-25, 21-25), and defeated Ashwaubenon 2-1 (21-25, 25-19, 15-8) and Wrightstown 2-0 (25-13, 25-23). They avenged the earlier loss to New Lutheran in the championship match, 2-1 (25-14, 21-25, 15-13).
• Jeffers won the Baraga Invitational tournament. Individual game scores were not provided.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team lost 32-6 at St. Thomas Saturday. Drew Wyble kicked two field goals, as the Tommies limited the Huskies to just 150 yards of offense.

Daniel Riser’s second field goal of the game early in the fourth quarter lifted Northern Michigan past Wisconsin-Oshkosh 13-10 Saturday.

The Finlandia University football squad fell 45-7 at Concordia-Chicago Saturday. Keveontai McDonald ran for 88 yards, and scored the Lions’ only touchdown in the closing minute.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team plays at Wisconsin-Parkside today.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team wound up in a 0-0 tie at Martin Luther Saturday. The Lions compete at Saint Scholastica today.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team plays at Blackburn College in Illinois today.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team lost to Grand Valley 0-3 (22-25, 13-25, 24-26) Saturday afternoon.

The Finlandia University volleyball team lost to Alverno 2-3 (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 18-25, 12-15) and Anderson 0-3 (9-25, 13-25, 11-25) at the Blue Angel Blast Saturday.

MLB

The Tigers earned a wet 8-4 victory over the Royals Saturday. Kerry Carpenter homered. Matt Manning earned the win, giving up three runs on just three hits before leaving in the seventh. The game ended midway through the eighth inning because of rain.

The Tigers conclude that series at Kansas City today. Tyler Alexander will start against Brady Singer. Because of Lion football, there will be no local radio broadcast.

The Brewers downed the Reds 5-1 Saturday. Adrian Houser turned in six effective innings, allowing one run on one hit. Willy Adames and Andrew McCutcheon homered.

The Brewers host the Reds again today. Brandon Woodruff will start against Justin Dunn.

Yet another Brewers starter has landed on the injured list. A day after Wily Peralta was officially sidelined, Eric Lauer was added to the list because of left elbow inflammation. Trevor Kelley has been called up from Nashville to fill in.

NFL

The Lions open their season today at home against the Eagles. Kickoff is at 1 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers begin their campaign with a 4:25 game at Minnesota today.
