VB Wins for Calumet, Hancock, Jeffers – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet blanked Houghton 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-20).
– Hancock edged Gwinn 3-2.
– Chassell v West Iron County – not reported.
– Baraga v Watersmeet – not reported.
– Ontonagon v Bessemer – not reported.
– Jeffers swept Ewen-Trout Creek 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-15). Heidi Hillstrom had 18 assists, Gracia Asiala had six kills, and Marissa Nordstrom recorded 15 digs.

In cross country, at the Foxes and Hounds meet at Westwood yesterday…
– Hancock won the girls meet, with Houghton second, and Calumet fifth. For the Bulldogs,  Kalli Chynoweth finished sixth individually, and Jacie Anderson came in ninth. For the Gremlins, Anabel Needham and Maria Velat finished second and third, and Ingrid Seagren placed seventh.
– Ishpeming win the boys meet, with Houghton second. For the Gremlins, Joe Wood took third place, Branden Peterson fifth, and Clayton Bulleit eighth.

Finlandia
Finlandia University volleyball player Jessie Diaz has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. Diaz tied her school record of 37 digs in the Lions’ recent win over Mount Mary.

MTU
Michigan Tech’s Laura DeMarchi has been named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II National Women’s Player of the Week. DeMarchi totaled 119 assists in the Huskies’ come-from-behind victories over Wayne State and Ashland last week.

MLB
The Chicago Cubs are out of the baseball playoffs. The Cubs fell to the Colorado Rockies 2-1 in the National League Wild Card play-in game last night. Tony Wolters’ two-out single in the top of the 13th inning drove in the winning run. The Milwaukee Brewers will host the Rockies in the opening game of their Divisional Series tomorrow.

The New York Yankees host the Oakland Athletics in the American League Wild Card play-in game tonight.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings open the regular season tomorrow at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 7:05 on KBear 102.3.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons begin their preseason campaign tonight on the road against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Listen for selected Pistons regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

The Four Wheelers of Michigan Tech are hosting their annual Fall Mud Bog Saturday at the Range Snowmobile Club. Registration will start at 8:00 am, and competition will begin at noon. For more details, click here.

The third annual Justin Fitch Memorial Ruck will begin at noon Saturday at Ray Kestner Waterfront Park. Ruck teams will carry packs for three, six, 12 or 22 hours, symbolizing the emotional burdens carried by combat veterans. Our high school football broadcasts continue with two games this week on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. On Friday, Houghton plays at Calumet. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40. On Saturday, Lake Linden-Hubbell entertains Munising. Pregame coverage will start at 1:40.
