High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Calumet swept Hancock 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-8). For the Copper Kings, Allie Bjorn had 12 kills and 10 digs. Jackie Kiilunen added six kills and nine digs, Maddie Torola 10 kills and seven digs, Caitlyn Strom three kills and eight digs, and Laina Kariniemi 31 assists and five aces. • Houghton blanked West Iron County 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-17).
• Lake Linden-Hubbell lost at Ironwood 3-0 (25-20, 25- 23, 25-12). Abi Codere and Madison Buschell each had six kills for the Lakes. Alli Corrigan had three aces. Payton Goldsworthy had 17 assists. Ashlyn Steves had 14 digs.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City got past Bessemer 3-2 (25-20, 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 15-7). Kiera Isaacson had four aces, 16 kills and 17 digs for the Blue Bolts. Nora Keranen had 18 assists.
• Baraga outlasted Ontonagon 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-12, 25-4).
• Ewen-Trout Creek blanked Watersmeet 3-0 (25-9, 25-22, 25-8).

NHL

The Red Wings fell to the Kraken 5-4 in overtime last night. Jaden Schwartz’ goal in the closing minutes of regulation forced the extra stanza, Jordan Eberle’s goal with five seconds left in the extra period ended Detroit’s five-game winning streak. Joe Veleno, Shayne Gostisbehere, Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat scored for the Wings. Ville Husso stopped 33 shots.

The Wings entertain the Maple Leafs tomorrow. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, we’ll join the game in progress after Houghton volleyball on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons begin their NBA season tonight at Miami. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit will open the season without Bojan Bogdanovic, Monte Morris and Isaiah Livers. Bogdanovic will miss a month or more with a right calf strain. Morris will be out at least three weeks with a right quad strain. Livers is rehabbing from a left ankle sprain, and will miss at least a month.

MLB

The Diamondbacks won the National League pennant last night, upending the Phillies 4-2 to win the National League Championship Series 4-3.

Arizona will face the Rangers in the World Series, with game one set for tomorrow night in Texas.

The Tigers are looking for a new first base coach. Alfredo Amézaga will not return, after holding down the post for a little over a year. Double-A Erie Seawolves manager Gabe Alvarez is reported to be the leading candidate to replace him.

NFL

Veteran receiver Marvin Jones has left the Lions to deal with a family matter. Jones and his family recently relocated to the west coast. In a statement he said that he found he could not balance playing in Detroit with his family obligations. The team has released him from his contract.
