MLB

The Detroit Tigers pounded the Milwaukee Brewers 8-3 last night. The Tigers broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Victor Reyes, Jeimer Candelario and Jorge Bonifacio. Candelario added a homer in the seventh inning. Spencer Turnbull got the win, giving up just three hits over six shutout innings. All three Milwaukee runs came off José Cisnero in the ninth. Adrian Houser took the loss.

The Tigers host the Milwaukee Brewers again this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will pitch against Corbin Burnes. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Tigers infielder Jonathan Schoop left last night’s game after he was hit on the wrist by a pitch in the fourth inning. X-rays proved negative, and he’s considered day-to-day.

Detroit has sent struggling outfielder Christin Stewart down to Toledo. Stewart is hitting just .171 this season. A replacement will be named today.

The Brewers brought Corey Knebel off the disabled list before last night’s game. He’d been sidelined with a strained hamstring as he attempts to return from Tommy John surgery. Utility player Mark Mathias has been sent down to make room. Milwaukee also officially released first baseman Justin Smoak. He had been designated for assignment last week, and no team claimed him on waivers.
