High School Volleyball Tourney
Lake Linden Hubbell LogoHoughton-Gremlins-Logo– In the high school volleyball tournament, Lake Linden-Hubbell won the Class D District title with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-14, 25-18) victory over Ontonagon. The Lakes will face Forest Park in the Regional semifinal Tuesday evening at 6:00 at Negaunee.
– In Class C tournament play, Calumet took the District title with a 3-0 win over L’Anse Thursday night. The Copper Kings will face Iron Mountain in the regional semifinal on Tuesday. That game will begin at 7:00 in L’Anse. Gwinn will face Indian River Inland Lakes in the other regional semifinal. If Gwinn and Calumet win on Tuesday, the regional final will be played Thursday at Negaunee. If Indian Lakes and Calumet win on Tuesday, the regional final will be played Thursday at Indian River.
– In Class B, Houghton lost to Kingsford 3-1 in the District championship game Friday night.

In other U.P. tournament matchups…
– In eight-man action, Cedarville shut out previously unbeaten Rapid River 28-0 Friday night. The Trojans will face Deckerville in the semifinals next Saturday. The Eagles advanced by beating Kingston 72-22.
– In Division Eight, Forest Park eliminated Bark River-Harris 36-12 Friday night. The Trojans will face the winner of this afternoon’s Munising at Saint Ignace game. If Munising wins, the game will be at Crystal Falls. If Saint ignace wins, the game will be played at the Straits.
– In Division Seven, Ishpeming defeated West Iron County 20-7. The unbeaten Hematites will host Traverse City Saint Francis next weekend. The Gladiators eliminated Suttons Bay 14-7.
– In Division Six, Negaunee’s season ended with a 47-0 loss to Boyne City Friday night.

MTU Hockey Wins 7th Straight
The Michigan Tech hockey team won its seventh-straight game Friday night, beating Alaska-Anchorage 2-0. Jamie Phillips stopped 19 shots to earn his third career shutout. Tyler Heinonen and Malcolm Gould scored for the ninth-ranked Huskies, who peppered Seawolves’ goaltender Olivier Mantha with 46 shots. The Huskies and Seawolves play again tonight. Faceoff is at 7:07 at MacInnes Arena.

The MTU soccer team’s season ended with a 5-0 loss to Grand Valley State in the semifinals of the GLIAC tournament Friday. With a record of 11-4-2, the Huskies still have a chance to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Pairings will be announced Monday.

The 20th-ranked MTU football team entertains number-23 Ashland this afternoon. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

The Tech volleyball team dropped the first set, then came back to defeat Northwood 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 26-24) Friday afternoon. The Huskies wrap up their regular season when they host Lake Superior State this afternoon at 4:00.

The 20th-ranked Northern Michigan University hockey team suffered its first loss of the season Friday night, falling 1-0 to Ferris State in overtime. The Wildcats host the Bulldogs again tonight.

The NMU football team plays at Ferris State this afternoon.

Finlandia
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia volleyball team advanced to the Great South Athletic Conference semifinals by defeating Pine Manor 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-21) Friday. The Lions will face Agnes Scott College from Decatur, Georgia this afternoon at 3:00. The winner of that game will play in the GSAC final at 5:30.

The Lions’ soccer team lost 8-0 to Wesleyan College in the opening round of the GSAC tournament on Friday.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team opened NCHA play with a 7-1 loss at top-ranked Saint Norbert Friday night. Those teams play again this afternoon. The Lions’ women’s team fell to Saint Scholastica 8-0 Friday evening. Finlandia hosts the Saints again this afternoon. Faceoff is at 2:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

Red Wings LogoNHL – Red Wings Down Devils
The Detroit Red Wings spotted New Jersey a one-goal lead, then scored four straight to defeat the Devils 4-2 Friday night. Niklas Kronwall had a goal and an assist for Detroit. The Wings host the Lightning tomorrow.

Detroit Pistons LogoNBA – Pistons Edge Bucks
The Detroit Pistons got past the Bucks 98-95 Friday night. Josh Smith hit the game winner with 15-seconds remaining, then stole a Milwaukee pass to seal the victory. The Pistons host the Jazz on Sunday.

NFL
The Lions return to action tomorrow at home against the Dolphins. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Packers host the Bears in the Sunday night game.
