High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Calumet swept Hancock 3-0 (25-22, 25-8, 25-19). Helen Beiring had 18 kills and 14 digs; Laina Karieniemi had 4 kills and 38 assists; Allie Bjorn and Maddie Torola each had 7 kills.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 3-0.
• Jeffers blanked Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-14). Sara Johnson led the Jets with 6 aces.
• Baraga swept Watersmeet 3-0.
• L’Anse defeated Chassell 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-9).
• Ontonagon v Bessemer – no report.

College Soccer

Both Finlandia University soccer teams play at North Central in Minneapolis this afternoon. 

College Baseball

Luke Paul is returning to Finlandia University as the head coach of the baseball team. Paul was a standout player for the Lions, and holds a number of school records. He spent several seasons as an assistant coach after graduation. Most recently, he was head coach at Jeffers High School, where he was named Coach of the Year in the Copper Mountain Conference twice.

He replaces Evan Brandt, who recently was named head coach at Presentation College.

MLB

The Tigers lost to the Astros 6-3 last night. Drew Hutchison pitched into the sixth, gave up four runs, and took the loss. Kody Clemens homered for Detroit.

The Tigers host the Astros again this afternoon. Joey Wentz will start against Cristian Javier. Coverage will begin at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers outscored the Cardinals 8-4 last night. Milwaukee used eight pitchers on a bullpen night. Opener Matt Bush left the game with right groin discomfort after retiring just one batter. Andrew McCutcheon homered.

The Brewers play in Saint Louis again this evening. Corbin Burnes will start against Adam Wainwright.

Our high school sports broadcasts continue tomorrow, when Houghton volleyball entertains Negaunee. Coverage begins around 6:10 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Houghton football hosts Bark River-Harris Saturday. Coverage begins at 1:10 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
