Volleyball Wins for Panthers, Jets, Hornets – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Chassell got past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-2 (25-20, 25-27, 17-25, 25-22, 15-13). For the Panthers, Trisha Pietila had 11 kills and 2 blocks, Kylee Sohlden has 7 kills and 4 aces, Saige Hietala had 8 kills and 4 aces, and Kierah Hietala had 22 assists and 3 aces.
• Jeffers dispatched Baraga 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 25-11). Sara Johnson led the Jets with 5 aces and 6 kills.
• L’Anse swept Watersmeet 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-12).

College Soccer

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team earned its first victory of the season, shading Northland College 1-0 last night. Anaya Arretche scored her first collegiate goal for the Lions. The Finlandia defense held the Lumberjills to just seven shots, four on goal.

MLB

The Tigers gave up two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning, and lost to the Angels 5-4 last night. With the score tied, Javier Báez singled home Kody Clemens to give Detroit a brief lead in the top of the 10th. But, it was Baez’ errant throw to the plate in the bottom of the 10th that allowed the tying run to score. Magneuris Sierra’s bunt single off Andrew Chafin then drove home the game-winner. Eduardo Rodriguez gave up three runs over seven innings in a good start.

The Tigers play at Los Angeles again this afternoon. Drew Hutchison will start against Patrick Sandoval. Coverage begins at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Randall Grichuk’s three-run homer off Taylor Rogers in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Rockies a 10-7 victory over the Brewers last night. The late meltdown spoiled a good start by Brandon Woodruff, who allowed a run on two hits over seven innings. Colorado scored five off Luis Perdomo and Peter Strzelecki in the eighth to tie the game. Milwaukee took a brief lead when Willy Adames doubled home Christian Yelich in the top of the 10th, but Yonathan Darza’s RBI double re-tied the contest in the bottom of the inning, setting the stage for Grichuk’s second homer of the night. Hunter Renfroe homered for the Crew, and Yelich blasted the second-longest home run int eh history of Coors Field.

The Brewers play in Colorado again this afternoon. Eric Lauer will start against Kyle Freeland.

NFL

The Lions have claimed offensive lineman Drew Forbes off waivers from the Cleveland Browns.
