Volleyball Wins for Houghton, Calumet – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Houghton blanked Hancock 3-0.
– Calumet breezed past L’Anse 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-11).
– Chassell hosts Ontonagon – not reported.

In high school football tonight…
– Hancock welcomes Hurley. Pregame coverage will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Houghton entertains Northland Pines.
– Calumet travels to West Iron County.
– L’Anse hosts the Gogebic Miners.
– Ontonagon journeys to Stephenson.

In football tomorrow, Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Bark River-Harris.

In hockey, Team Copper Country hosts Green Bay and Duluth this weekend. Games begin tomorrow at 2:00 and 7:00, and Sunday at 8:00 and 11:00.

The Jeffers Jets 5k/10k run will be held tomorrow. On-site registration opens at 7:30, and the races begin at 9:00.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s soccer team lost to Maranatha Baptist 5-0 yesterday. The Lions were outshot 43-9.

The Lions men’s soccer team welcomes Great Lakes Christian College tomorrow at noon.

The Finlandia football team hosts Lewis-Clark Valley tomorrow at 5:00 at McAfee Field. Our pregame coverage will begin around 4:40 on 99.3 The Lift, and 993TheLift.com.

The Finlandia volleyball team plays at Carroll University tomorrow.

The Finlandia hockey program is holding a garage sale tomorrow. Used equipment will be available, including helmets, gloves, sticks and skate sharpeners. The sale will run from 10:00 until 2:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

MTU
The MTU soccer team plays at Saginaw Valley State today at noon.

The Huskies volleyball team plays at Grand Valley State tonight, and Wayne State tomorrow.

The MTU football team entertains Northern Michigan University in the annual Miner’s Cup game tomorrow night at 7:00 at Sherman Field.

MLB
Daniel Norris pitched five scoreless innings, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-1 last night. All of Detroit’s runs came in the top of the fifth, three of them on a bases-loaded double by Nicholas Castellanos. It was only their fourth win this month.

The Tigers open their final series of the season tonight at Minnesota. Matthew Boyd will pitch against Kyle Gibson. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Brett Phillips doubled home the winning run in the sixth inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers held on for a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds yesterday.

The Brewers begin a series at Saint Louis tonight. Chase Anderson will start against John Gant.

Colorado was off yesterday. With three games remaining, the Brewers trail the Rockies by two games in the race for the final National League wild card playoff berth.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Green Bay Packers cruised to an easy 35-14 victory over the Chicago Bears. Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes, in a game that was delayed 47 minutes after the first quarter because of a thunderstorm.

The win was costly for the Pack. Running back Ty Montgomery left after suffering broken ribs on the first drive of the evening. Backup Jamal Williams was forced out with a knee injury. Wide receiver Davante Adams took a vicious hit to the head from Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan. Adams was taken off the field on a stretcher, and is being evaluated for head and neck injuries. Trevathan could face a fine or suspension.

The Lions visit the Vikings in a 1:00 game on Sunday. Minnesota quarterback Sam Bradford will miss the game because of an injury. Case Keenum will fill in. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Chicago Blackhawks scored three times in the third period, and defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 last night in NHL exhibition play. Rookie Michael Rasmussen scored his third goal of the preseason for Detroit. Petr Mrazek made 37 saves, but took the loss.

The Wings entertain the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. Listen for regular-season Red Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.
