WCHA Tourney Opens Tonight – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In hockey last night…
• Houghton blanked Negaunee 7-0.
• Marquette scored four goals in the first period, and defeated Hancock 6-3. Austin Salani had two goals and an assist for the Bulldogs, and Mason Mikesch also scored.
• Calumet concluded an unbeaten regular season with a 6-0 win over Kingsford. Paul Sturos scored twice. Dean Loukus had a goal and two assists. Nolan Sturos, Noah Jukuri and Caden Lehto found the net, and Jackson Rilei had a pair of assists. Aksel Loukus earned the shutout in net. The Kings outshot the Flivvers 46-16.

In hockey this evening…
• Houghton concludes its regular season at Marquette.

In girls basketball last night…
• Calumet overwhelmed Chassell 72-24. Elli Djerf led the Copper Kings with 28 points. Maelene Warren scored six for the Panthers.
• Jeffers cruised past Lake Linden-Hubbell 64-29.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City got past Republic-Michigamme 54-47. Ashley Datto led the Blue Bolts with 22 points.
• L’Anse shut down Watersmeet 60-26. Maija Rice scored 22 for the Purple Hornets.

In boys play last night…
• Calumet got past Houghton 62-47.
• Jeffers outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 98-50. Johnny Schutz drained 11 three-pointers, and led all scorers with 37 for the Jets. Levi Frahm added 25. William Lyons scored 23 for the Lakes, and Marcus Sutherland chipped in 17.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City stopped Republic-Michigamme 67-31.
• L’Anse fell to Watersmeet 56-50.
• Ewen-Trout Creek downed Ironwood 68-46. Jaden Borseth scored 24 for the Panthers.
• The Hancock game at Ishpeming was canceled.

Both Copper Country Christian School teams lost at Maplewood Baptist Academy yesterday. The girls fell 72-16 – Nora Holmes scored seven points. The boys fell 52-39 – Sawyer Rebman had 18 points on six three-pointers. Those teams play again this morning in Kinross.

In girls-boys doubleheaders tonight…
• Chassell plays at Baraga.
• Ewen-Trout Creek visits Ontonagon.

On the boys schedule tomorrow afternoon…
  • Calumet plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. JV tipoff is at 1:00, with the varsity at 2:30.

The Upper Peninsula High School diving championships will be held today at Marquette. The swim championships will take place tomorrow.

College Hockey

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament begins tonight, with best-of-three quarterfinal series. Michigan Tech skates at Bemidji State. The Huskies are seeded fifth, and the Beavers fourth. Northern Michigan plays at Bowling Green, Lake Superior State hosts Alabama Huntsville, and top-seeded Minnesota State entertains Ferris State.

College Basketball

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team will wrap up its season at home against Riverland Community College from Austin, Minnesota, tonight. Coverage will begin around 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

The NCAA Division II basketball tournament opens today. At the women’s regional in Springfield, Missouri, Grand Valley State faces Ashland at 7:00. The winner will face top-seed Michigan Tech tomorrow at 6:00. At the men’s regional in Evansville, Indiana, Lewis plays Southern Indiana tonight at 9:30. The winner will take on second seeded Michigan Tech tomorrow night at 9:30.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team hosts Ferris State this afternoon at 2:00, and tomorrow at noon.

The NMU volleyball team entertains Northwood today and tomorrow.

NHL

Six Red Wings scored, as Detroit defeated Tampa Bay 6-4 last night. It was the Wings’ first regulation victory over Tampa in six years.

The Wings host the Carolina Hurricanes Sunday. Coverage begins at 4:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons dropped a 105-102 heartbreaker to the Charlotte Hornets last evening. Jerami Grant scored 32.

The Pistons visit the Brooklyn Nets tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 10-6 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Starter Michael Fulmer was torched for seven runs over two innings. He served up three home runs.

The Tigers play the New York Yankees this afternoon. Coverage begins at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift. Julio Teheran is scheduled to start for Detroit.

In Cactus League action, the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Kansas City Royals 4-2 yesterday. Starter Josh Lindblom gave up all four runs over three innings. Manny Piña homered.

The Brewers will face the Chicago Cubs this afternoon.

Great Bear Chase

This year’s Great Bear Chase will be held tomorrow at the Swedetown Trails. As usual, the event will feature 50k, 25k and 10k freestyle and classic races, along with a 50k skiathlon. Because of COVID-19 limitations, the number of participants was reduced to 550, and no spectators will be allowed at the start or finish. Also because of COVID-19 concerns, tonight’s Junior Bear Chase will be limited to registered members of the Copper Country Ski Tigers.
