WestPAC Baseball, Softball Tourneys Today – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Jeffers defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 21-5 in their doubleheader opener. The second game was called off because of weather and field conditions.
• L’Anse v Ontonagon – no report.
• Ewen-Trout Creek lost two at Ironwood, 5-0 and 9-3.

In softball yesterday…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell downed Jeffers 15-0. Kara Kinnunen got the win for the Lakes, Olivia Shank and Hailey Crouch each tripled. The second game of the doubleheader was rained out.

The WestPAC baseball and softball tournaments will both be staged today in the Copper Country.

In the baseball tourney, Hancock will open against Westwood at 11:00 at the Driving Park. The winner of that game will play Negaunee in one semifinal at 1:00 at the Driving Park. Calumet will face Iron Mountain at 11:00 at Houghton High School. The winner of that contest will take on Houghton in the other semifinal at 1:00 at Houghton High School. The championship game will be played this afternoon at 3:30 at the Houghton High School field.

In the softball tourney, Calumet will open against Ishpeming at 9:00 at the Driving Park. Hancock will play Iron Mountain at 11:00. The winners will play in one semifinal at 1:00 at the Driving Park. Houghton will play Westwood at 9:00 at the Houghton field, and Negaunee will take on Gwinn at 11:00. The winners will meet in the other semifinal at 1:00 at the Houghton field. The championship game will be played at 3:30 at the Driving Park.

NBA

The Heat defeated the Celtics 111-105 last evening, and took a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. The Nuggets visit the Lakers as the Western Conference finals continue tonight. Denver leads that series 2-0.

NHL

The Golden Knights opened the Western Conference finals with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Stars last night. The Hurricanes host the Panthers as the Eastern Conference finals continue this evening. Florida leads that series 1-0.

MLB

The Tigers held off the Nationals 8-6 last night. Detroit built an early 8-0 lead, with homers from Zach McInstry, Akil Baddoo, Matt Vierling and Riley Greene. Matthew Boyd turned in five no-hit innings, but left after surrendering a three-run homer in the sixth. Washington added three more in the seventh off Mason Englert, but Chasen Shreve, Jason Foley and Alex Lange held them hitless the rest of the way.

The Tigers visit the Nationals again this afternoon. Alex Faedo will start against Patrick Corbin. Coverage will begin at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers fell to the Rays 1-0 last evening. Adrian Houser tossed six shutout innings. The only run of the game came on a sacrifice fly off Peter Strzelecki in the eighth.

Those teams play again this afternoon. Eric Lauer will pitch against Zach Eflin.

Milwaukee starter Wade Miley could miss the next two months. Miley was pulled in the second inning of Tuesday’s game with what was initially diagnosed as a lat strain. The injury has now been diagnosed as a pulled muscle in his pitching shoulder, with a recovery time of six to eight weeks.
