WestPAC Copper FB All-Stars Named – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Calumet’s match against Kingsford was canceled.
• Chassell blanked Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0 (25-7, 25-13, 25-17).
• Baraga swept L’Anse 3-0.

On tonight’s schedule…
• Calumet plays at Hancock.
• Houghton travels to West Iron County.
• Chassell welcomes Jeffers.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell journeys to Ironwood – canceled – no school at Ironwood.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Bessemer – canceled – no school at Bessemer.
• Baraga visits Ontonagon – canceled – no school at Ontonagon.

The WestPAC has named its Copper Division All-Conference team.

Local players on the offense include L’Anse quarterback Alex Kissel, Calumet running back Dryden Nelson, L’Anse receiver Steele Jondreau, and linemen Jack Borree of Houghton and Eli Ostermeyer of L’Anse.

Local players on the defense include defensive back Nathan Erva from Houghton, inside linebacker Chet Hyrkas of Calumet, outside linebacker Malecki Goyen of L’Anse, defensive ends Xander Zapolnik of Houghton and Flash Gagnon from L’Anse, and lineman Lenny Bjorn of Calumet. Hyrkas was named co-defensive player of the year.

The punter is Austin Salani of Hancock, and the kicker is Hancock’s Connor LeClair.

The Dodgers face the Rays as the World Series continues tonight. L-A leads the Fall Classic 3-2.

The Tigers continue to talk with candidates for their open manager’s job. The latest that have reportedly sat for interviews include Braves catching instructor Sal Fasano, Athletics quality control coach Mark Kotsay, and Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin. Nevin played for Detroit for three seasons back in the ’90s, and has also managed in the Tigers’ minor league system.

NHL

Red Wings defenseman Trevor Daley has retired. Daley spent the last three of his 16 NHL seasons with Detroit. He has accepted a job with the Penguins as a hockey operations advisor.

NFL

In last night’s game, the Rams shut down the Bears 24-10. You must have picked every game correctly to be eligible to be this week’s winner in The Wolf Pro Football Challenge.

Our high school football playoff coverage begins Saturday afternoon. Houghton plays at Calumet on KBear 102.3. Hancock visits Gladwin on 99.3 The Lift. Lake Linden-Hubbell travels to Forest Park on 97.7 The Wolf.
