Wings Draft More Swedes – Thursday Sports Wrap

MLB

In the American League Divisional Series yesterday…
• The Athletics rallied late to beat the Astros 9-7. Houston leads that series 2-1.
• The Rays outslugged the Yankees 8-4. Tampa leads that set 2-1.

In the National League Divisional Series…
• The Braves blanked the Marlins 2-0. Atlanta leads that series 2-0.
• The Dodgers held off the Padres 6-5. L-A is up 2-0 in that set.

All of those series continue today.

NBA

The NBA championship series continues tomorrow. The Lakers lead the Heat 3-1.

NHL

A day after using their first selection in the NHL Draft on Swedish forward Lucas Raymond, the Detroit Red Wings went back to Sweden for most of the second round. With pick 32, they took defenseman William Wallinder. With pick 51, they selected forward Theodor Niederback. They used their final second-round pick on Texas forward Cross Hanas. In the third round, the Wings selected Canadian defenseman Donovan Sebrango, and Finnish defenseman Eemil Viro. In the closing rounds they picked Sam Stange, who is slated to play college hockey at Wisconsin; Czech goaltender Jan Bednar, defenseman Alex Cotton; American forward Chase Bradley; and two players whose families have NHL history – Kyle Aucoin, the son of Adrian Aucoin; and Kienan Draper, the son of former Red Wings player and current director of amateur scouting Kris Draper.

Michigan Tech freshman Carson Bantle was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes with the 142nd pick in the fifth round. Bantle played for the Madison Capitols in the USHL last season.

College

The Mid-American Conference has released its COVID-19-abbreviated fall football schedule. Each school will play six games beginning November 4th, with the division champions concluding the season with a championship contest December 18th. Central Michigan University will open at home against Ohio University, Eastern Michigan will begin at Kent State, and Western Michigan University will open at Akron.

NFL

The Bears host the Buccaneers in tonight’s NFL contest. Coverage begins at 8:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Lions and Packers are both off this weekend.

Another New England player has tested positive for COVID-19. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore is the third Patriot to be infected. The team has canceled practices. At this point, Sunday’s game against the Broncos is still on the schedule.
