Wings Fall; Kings Softball Takes Two – Wednesday Sports Wrap

Red Wings LogoThe Detroit Red Wings have their backs to the wall, after falling to the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 last night. Tampa took an early lead on two power play goals by Nikita Kucherov. Darren Helm and Gustav Nyquist scored for Detroit in the second period to tie the game, but Ondrej Palat’s power play tally with three minutes remaining in regulation gave the Lightning the win. Petr Mrazek made 25 saves. Tampa leads the best-of-seven opening round playoff series three wins to one, and could move on to the next round with a victory on their home ice tomorrow night. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons face the Cavaliers this evening in Cleveland. The Cavs lead that best-of-seven opening-round playoff series one game to none.

Shane Greene struggled, as the Detroit Tigers lost 8-6 to the Kansas City Royals last night. KC scored three in the second inning, two in the third, and chased Greene from the game as they added three more in the fifth. Greene was charged with seven of those runs. Jarrod Saltalamacchia continued his hot start at the plate by hitting his fifth homer of the season for Detroit.

The Tigers continue that series at Kansas City tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will pitch against Ian Kennedy. Hear the first pitch at 7:15 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers held off the Minnesota Twins 6-5 yesterday afternoon. Wily Peralta got past a shaky start to turn in his best outing of the season. He allowed two runs over five innings. Milwaukee scored three in the fifth to take the lead. Minnesota tied it with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Scooter Gennett’s RBI single in the top of the ninth gave Milwaukee the win.

The Brewers face the Twins again tonight, but the scene shifts to Milwaukee. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Tommy Milone.

In softball yesterday…
– Calumet swept a doubleheader at Superior Central, 19-3 and 21-2. Emily Erkkila was the winning pitcher in the first game, and Vera Peterson got the win in the nightcap.
– Baraga took two from Jeffers, 17-0 and 36-9. Vikings batters hit for a .679 average, and stole 50 bases.

Houghton-Gremlins-LogoBoth the Houghton boys and girls track teams took third place finishes at the U.P. Division One meet in Marquette yesterday. On the boys side, Casey Lentowich won the 55-meter hurdles. Justin Jurva placed second in the 200-meter run, and Brad Ohtonen took second in the shot put.  On the girls side, Kendra Monette won the 55-meter, Cara Monette placed second in the high jump, and Nicole St. Martin took second in the pole vault. The Calumet girls squad placed ninth, with Hailey Wickstrom getting a win in the high jump. Link to full results here.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team split its doubleheader at Northland College yesterday. The Lumberjacks took the first game 5-2. The Lions came back to take the nightcap 8-7 in eight innings. Finlandia built a 6-2 lead after three innings. Northland scored five times in the fifth to go up by one. Finlandia re-tied the game with an unearned run in the sixth. Joey Krug doubled home the winning run in the top of the eighth.
