Wings' Season Ends – Friday Sports Wrap

The Detroit Red Wings’ season ended last night with a 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Goalies Petr Mrazek and Ben Bishop matched save for save until Alex Killorn redirected a pass into the Detroit net with 1:43 remaining in regulation. Mrazek stopped 23 shots; Bishop fielded 34. The Lightning win the opening-round playoff series four games to one.

The Penguins beat the Rangers – Pittsburgh leads that series 3-1. The Ducks defeated the Predators – that set is tied at two. The Blackhawks edged the Blues in double overtime – St. Louis is up 3-2 in that series.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight. Cleveland leads that best-of-seven opening round series two games to none.

The Thunder, Rockets and Raptors won their games last night.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost to the Kansas City Royals 4-0 last night. Edinson Volquez pitched seven strong innings for KC. Mike Pelfrey struggled for Detroit, giving up all four runs over five innings.

The Tigers return home to open a set against Cleveland tonight. Justin Verlander will pitch against Josh Tomlin. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Minnesota Twins 8-1 yesterday. Taylor Jungmann struggled through four innings, giving up three runs and walking six.

The Brewers open a home series against the Phillies tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Aaron Nola.

Milwaukee has brought outfielder Alex Presley up from Triple-A Colorado Springs. He’ll replace Keon Broxton, who was recently sent down.

MTU
The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team entertains Wayne State tomorrow, and Northwood on Sunday.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team plays two games at North Central University this afternoon, and two more tomorrow.

The Finlandia softball team was scheduled to host Martin Luther College and Northland College this weekend, but the games have been canceled because of poor field conditions. Those games will not be made up. The Lions finish their season with a 5-19 record.

High School
In high school softball yesterday…
– Calumet and L’Anse split a doubleheader. The Copper Kings took the first game, 11-4. Emily Erkkila was the winning pitcher – she struck out seven and walked just one. Clara Loukus homered. L’Anse took the nightcap 10-8. Leah Kiilunen tripled and doubled for the Copper Kings, and Reinna Berg had three hits.

On today’s softball schedule…
– Houghton plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.

In baseball today…
– Houghton visits Jeffers.
– Hancock plays at L’Anse.

Sisu Shuffle
The UP Health System-Portage Sisu Shuffle will be held tomorrow at 11:00 at the Portage campus in Hancock. It’s a 5k fun run/walk that’s designed for the entire family. There is no charge, but you do need to register. You can do that onsite beginning around 10:30 tomorrow morning.
