Wings Set to Name Coach – Tuesday Sports Wrap

MLB – Tigers
The Tigers had yesterday off, and open an interleague series against the Cubs tonight in Detroit. Anibal Sanchez will start against Jon Lester. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Jimmy Nelson struck out seven over six innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0. The game was delayed twice by rain. Jean Segura drove in the only run Milwaukee needed with a groundout in the fifth. Ryan Braun singled home an insurance run in the eighth.

Milwaukee continues that set at Pittsburgh tonight. Taylor Jungmann will make his major league debut for Milwaukee. Francisco Liriano will start for the Pirates.

The Tigers used their first pick in last night’s amateur draft to take Texas high school pitcher Beau Burrows. Burrows has a fastball that reaches 99 miles per hour, and a good breaking ball. He has committed to Texas A-and-M University.

With their second pick of the night, they selected University of Tennessee outfielder Christin Stewart. With their third pick they took TCU left-hander Tyler Alexander – whom they had also drafted out of high school two years ago.

The Brewers opened their draft by taking Texas high school outfielder Trent Clark. With their second selection, they took left-hander Nathan Kirby from the University of Virginia. With their third pick, they selected Cal Poly-Pomona junior Cody Ponce, a right-handed pitcher.

The draft continues today and tomorrow.

– At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, Auto Value shut down Monte Carlo/Coca Cola 20-4. Alex Loukus was the winning pitcher, and also hit a home run. D.J. Coponen also homered for Auto Value. Post 90/Lakes Lounge defeated Matt’s Auto Glass 24-15. Joel Michaelson and Jason Sedar homered for the winners.
– At Hurontown,  Marley Bar scored 14 runs in the first inning, and stopped B & B Bar/Daytona Body Shop 28-5. Luke Paul homered, and was the winning pitcher. Devon Kero and Joel Lesperance  also homered.

Wings to Name Coach This Morning
The Detroit Red Wings will make official this morning what we’ve known for some time – Jeff Blashill will be their next head coach. Blashill has been coaching Detroit’s top farm team in Grand Rapids, and is given much of the credit for developing Detroit’s promising young players. At age 41, he will be the second-youngest coach in the league.

Finlandia Adds Hakkarinen
Finlandia Helmet FeatureThe Finlandia University football team has added Ishpeming High School standout Ozzy Hakkarinen to its roster. Hakkarinen earned Mid Peninsula Conference All League First Team honors for running back and defensive back. The Finlandia football team will open its first season September 5th against Alma College at McAfee Field.
