Gibson Cup
The Calumet Wolverines claimed the historic Gibson Cup with a 7-2 victory over the Portage Lake Pioneers last night. Ryan Kuntze’s goal late in the first period gave the Pioneers a brief lead, but Jeff Erkkila tied the game less than a minute later. Devin Smith’s tally early in the second put Calumet on top for good, and they extended the lead to 5-1 by the close of the middle period. Erkkila led the Wolverines with a hat trick. Calumet took the best-of-three series two games to one. It’s the first Gibson Cup series win for the Wolverines since 2007. They were also the Great Lakes Hockey League regular-season champions, and were runners-up in the GLHL tournament.

Team CC
Team Copper Country assured itself a place in the national tournament quarterfinals by defeating McKinney, Texas, 6-2 last night in their second pool game at Green Bay last night. Dawson McKay scored Team CC’s first three goals – one on a power play, one at even strength, and one short-handed. Brent Loukus scored twice, and Daunte Fortner found the net once. Dawson Kero made seven saves, as Team CC outshot McKinney 48-9. It was a testy contest, with the teams combining for 16 penalties.

Team Copper Country will play one more pool game today, against the unbeaten Wonderland Wizards from Bridgeport, Connecticut. Our broadcast coverage will begin at 4:45 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. The result of that game will determine their opponent in the quarterfinals. Win or lose, their quarterfinal game will begin tomorrow at 1:00. KBear 102 will continue to follow them as far as they go in the tournament.
