The Finlandia women’s basketball team outscored Saint Catherine 91-82 in double overtime at their closing game at the Wisconsin-Superior Holiday Shootout Saturday. The Lions led late in regulation, but the Wildcats scored five points in the final 30 seconds to force overtime. The first overtime saw each team score just six points. Finlandia outscored Saint Catharine 18-9 in the second extra stanza. Natalie Bartle poured in 33 points for the Lions, and Maija Rice added 20.

NHL

The Red Wings spotted the Senators an early two-goal lead, then came back to take a 4-2 victory Saturday evening. Pius Suter put Detroit on the scoreboard in the second period, and Lucas Raymond, Elmer Soderblom and Michael Rasmussen each scored in the third. Magnus Hellberg made 21 saves, and earned the win in net.

The Wings host the Devils Wednesday. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons defeated the Timberwolves 116-104 Saturday night. Bojan Bogdanovic starred again, leading Detroit with 28 points. Marvin Bagley III added 18, and snared 10 rebounds.

The Pistons visit the Trailblazers tomorrow.

College Football

Georgia will face TCU for the college football championship.

In the playoff semifinals Saturday…
• At the Fiesta Bowl, third-seed TCU grabbed an early lead, then held off second-seed University of Michigan’s comeback to earn a wild 51-45 victory.
• Top-seed Georgia came from behind to edge fourth-seed Ohio State 42-41 in the Peach Bowl. Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Adonai Mitchell with 54 seconds left was the game winner. The Buckeyes missed a 50-yard field goal with time expiring that would have won the game.

The Bulldogs and Horned Frogs will play for the national title January 9th.

MLB

The Tigers have obtained infielder Tyler Nevin from the Orioles, in exchange for cash considerations. Nevin is primarily a third-baseman, but can also play first, and the corner outfield positions. Nevin hit .291 with seven homers in 44 games for Baltimore’s Triple-A Norfolk affiliate last season, but struggled with a .197 average and just two home runs in 58 games with the Orioles. He is the son of former Tiger, and current Angels manager, Phil Nevin.
